Winter Party!
We are excited to celebrate our Holiday Party on Friday, 12/21, from 1:45pm to
2:45pm!
We have two games and one craft set up for the classes. To maintain compliance with the Rose Glen policy, we are asking that no treats (food) be sent in for the party. Before the fall party, we had asked that you send in $5 for your child. If you didn’t do so then, please try and send in as soon as you can. This will cover expenses for the party. At the end of each party, money will be rolled over to the next party, etc. At the end of the year, usually there is enough money left that we should be able to have a pizza party for the classes!
After the Holiday party, there is a school sing-a-long and parents/volunteers are
more than welcome to join their child’s class and celebrate with them.
Activities are being planned by a parent representative for each class.

Math Workshop
Mathematicians will be finishing operations and computation of multiplication and division this week and evolve into fractions on Monday! We will start with a problem solving unit which will introduce fractions. This unit will span 2 weeks and finish Friday, December 21. As you prepare and support your mathematician for this unit, think of common fractions, ¼, ½, ¾, ⅓, and ⅔ in common situations around your home to help review the idea of fractions being less than 1 whole.
Talking Points:
a.) The recipe calls for ½ cup sugar in the cookie and ¼ cup sugar in the icing. How much total sugar is in the cookie?
b.) Is ⅜ closer to 0, ½ or 1 whole?
c.) What fractions are equal to ½?
Reading & Language Workshop
Readers have been digging into our current unit: Discovery. Our most recent books that we have been reading in Language Workshop are Tito Puente and Hello, I’m Johnny Cash. Both musicians opened doors for other musicians and genres with their passion for music. In our Literature Discussion Groups, we have been focusing on discoveries and how humanity can be impacted. Next week, we will be reading a book about a music genre that many students are familiar with; rap. We will be reading a book about Kool Herc. Students will listen to find out how Clive Cambell, otherwise known as Kool Herc, came to be a DJ. They will discuss how kids in gangs stopped fighting in order to breakdance, and how the music he invented went on to define a culture and transform the world. This will be our last book for the unit. Our next unit will begin after the holiday break. This will be our Investigation Unit, where students will be thinking about mysteries and how they are solved.
Talking Points:
What did you learn about the lives and music from Tito Puente and Johnny Cash that surprised you?
What did you enjoy the most about doing your informational book on Book Creator?
Writing Workshop
Social Studies
At the end of this week, we started a new unit on Geography. We started this unit with a review of continent and ocean names. Throughout this unit, we will work on map scale and using scales like 1in = 10 feet and 1 inch = 100 miles to help find the distance between locations. Then we will move on to learning about longitude and latitude, Equator and Prime Meridian.
Talking points for your child in Science and SS:
When looking at a map, what do you need to look for?
What are the continents and oceans of the world?
THANK YOU Mr. Marien!

Dress for the weather!
Please remember to send kids dressed for the weather; coats, hats, gloves, and yes, even snowpants and boots! Make sure that these items are labeled. There are always many pairs of black snowpants in our 4th grade hallway. Also, please remind your child that they will need to change out of snowboots into shoes or dress boots for the day. Thank you!
