A Note from the Principal - 2020-21 Virtual Opening Ceremony

As you may know, we have a long-standing tradition of welcoming new students and staff to the building at our Opening Ceremony each fall where new students and staff get the opportunity to walk through arches to the song, “Step by Step.” Students and staff don’t walk under the arches again until they leave the building for new places (new town, new school, etc).

This year posed a challenge in the fact that we could not come together at our traditional ceremony in the gym, but we were able to collect pictures and video from our hybrid and VLA students and families to re-create what we would normally do in person. Our 2020-21 Opening Ceremony video was shared with students and families through SeeSaw today, but please feel free to enjoy it again HERE!

Battle of the Books - Virtual!

2nd through 5th graders have the opportunity to participate in Battle of the Books. This year, we will be entirely virtual, so students in all learning models can participate. This slideshow explains how the event will look this year, what the responsibilities of parent/guardian coaches entail, which books will be used in the battle, and how to sign up. You and your child may make requests for other students who you’d like to be on teams with, but it is not required. Also, requests are not guaranteed due to moving students around because of coaching need. This information was shared with students last week through their Media Seesaw class (hybrid) or from their classroom teacher (VLA). Registration must be complete by today, October 14. You may contact Sarah Lanners,, if you have questions. We hope to get lots of readers involved in this program!

VLA Book Checkout

If your VLA student requests library books, please remember to come and pick them up! We have added an additional pickup day this week, between 10am-2pm today, October 14. For the future pickup dates, and information on how to request curbside book checkout, you can look on the Media Center website, linked here.

Fall Conferences

We are excited to share that conferences will look a little different this year! Instead of having two nights dedicated to conferences as we have in the past, we will be offering a "Fall Conference Window" this year from October 20-30 for all hybrid and VLA students and families. Your child's homebase teacher will be connecting with you to set up a 15-minute time slot that works for your family to meet virtually.

We have a long-standing tradition of student-led conferences, and while we won't be having our traditional 15 minutes for you to review your child's Progressfolio, we do ask that your child be part of the 15-minute conference with the teacher to review what's going well and to set goals for our upcoming time together. We hope to return to our "student led" format for our spring conferences.

If your child receives special education and/or EL services, case managers will also be reaching out to families to schedule a 15-minute time to connect. Specialist teachers will also be available to meet with families. You can schedule a conference time with them or just drop in their WebEx room on the following nights (click on the specialist's name to access their WebEx room):

If you'd like to connect with Mrs. Classon or Mrs. McDonald at any time during the conference window, please let us know!

2020-21 Yearbooks & Fall Pictures

Fall pictures have been scheduled for November 9th and 10th to accommodate both A and B students. VLA students will have an opportunity to get their pictures taken as well. The VLA picture time is on November 10th from 4:00-6:30 pm. More information will be coming as the date approaches.
