Solar Eclipses
Solar Eclipse: When the moon's shadow appears on Earths surface
As Earth rotates, the moon's shadow moves along Earths surface
If you are outside the umbra & penumbras you cannot see a solar eclipse at all
You can only see a total solar eclipse from within the moon's umbra
a total solar eclipse last no longer than about 7 min.
Solar eclipses only occur during a new moon, however they don't occur very new moon
Lunar Eclipse
Lunar Eclipse: occurs when the Moon moves into Earth's shadow
Occurs only during a full moon
Unlike solar eclipses, you can see any lunar eclipse from any location on the side of Earth facing the Moon.
When the entire Moon moves through Earth's umbra, a total lunar eclipse occurs
You can still see the Moon even when it is completely within Earth's umbra
