Week of September 19, 2016

The teachers say...

Thanks for attending Back to School Night!

Important Dates:

Graded work folders go home today! (Monday)

Math: Topic 2 involves adding and subtracting larger numbers and estimating.

English: We will continue to focus on the following parts of speech: nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.

Science: This week we are completing our first packet on the study of water. Ask your fourth grader how much of the earth's water we can use. Hint: it's less than you think.

Reading: We are beginning the story My Librarian is a Camel, which tells how children in the most isolated parts of the world receive books to read. We will study cause and effect and using context clues to understand new words.

Spelling: Unit 2 words from My Librarian is a Camel - TEST Friday. The list is being sent home today and is also available on the 4th grade link to the MJS website.

Social Studies: Test tomorrow-- Tuesday, September 20th. You can help your child review at home by studying the vocabulary terms and the review questions/answers in the packet.

Speech and Debate Notice

Laura Garcia will be in charge of this year's MJS Elementary Speech & Debate team. The team will consist of all interested 3rd and 4th graders . Students should plan to attend at least one practice this week, with Wednesday from 3:30-4:30 or Friday from 2:30-3:30. The first tournament is on October 20th at La Salle High School in Sierra Madre. The team members will have a chance to recite poetry, storytelling - either alone or as a duo - as well as try their hand at extemporaneous speaking! The practice schedule will be discussed and emailed to parents of participating team members.

Religion Corner

This week we will be discussing social justice. In kid terms, this means working together for justice, peace and human rights for every person. Certainly Saint Mother Teresa was an example of this. We will learn about St. Francis of Assisi and how to find a reading in the bible.
