Mass Readings for Sunday, February 21: First Sunday of Lent
In Mark's Gospel this weekend, we listen to the account of Jesus' difficult encounters in the desert. The Gospel describes:
"The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert,
and he remained in the desert for forty days,
tempted by Satan.
He was among wild beasts,
and the angels ministered to him."
Jesus knows what it is like to be tempted. Jesus knows what it is like to be challenged. Jesus knows what it is like to be in the wilderness. He’s been there. And it was in the wilderness, immediately after His Baptism, that Jesus struggled, grieved, doubted and suffered great temptations. But as we know in the Good News, Jesus overcame!
In reflecting on our most difficult times, those times when we are in our own "desert" and lost, we recognize that those are the times of great opportunity. We learn more about ourselves, our relationship with God and others, and most of all, God's plan for us.
Activities for Family
Pull Up Weeds, Plant Good Seeds!
As we strive to become closer with God, we want to try to "pull up the weeds" (rid the bad) and "plant good seeds" (encourage the good)! To do this, we follow these practices during Lent:
- Pray - prayer and/or reading the Bible
- Fast - to give up something for religious purpose
- Give - gifts of kindness, love, and giving
Many times, we are more conscious of our actions when we chart our deeds. During these 40 days, create this simple colorful chart!
- At the top, write the word: LENT
- On each side, write "PULL UP WEEDS" and "PLANT GOOD SEEDS," to remind us of our Lent goals.
- Create a key (PRAY, FAST, GIVE, GOOD DEED) to chart your positive actions that bring you closer to Jesus and God.

Super Bowl's National Anthem in ASL Steals the Show!
At the Super Bowl LV, Warren "WAWA" Snipe, stunned the world and stole the show as he performed the National Anthem in American Sign Language (ASL)! Wawa is a graduate of Gallaudet University and calls the DC metro area home. He performed the national anthem and other songs in American Sign Language (ASL) during the event pregame show and other event's in the past.
Snipe told CBS News that he believes it is important to have an ASL performer for the iconic songs at the big game for a main reason: "Access. Simple as that...." He explains:
"The Deaf and Hard of Hearing community needs access to these iconic songs just like everyone else. To those who are hearing, try watching television with the sound and captions off, and you'll experience inaccessibility. Why wouldn't you want to make everything accessible to everyone, including Deaf and Hard of Hearing people?"
