COVID Impacts School
In March of 2020, a global pandemic hit the US called the coronavirus or COVID-19. States started getting cases, second by second! September is here and we're back at school.
We asked two kids and one teacher about how COVID-19 has impacted school. Ian Tresnak said, "It makes it harder to interact with friends." Dalton Beaulieu said, "It's hard to follow these safety rules." Mrs. Logan said that "It is hard teaching the online kids and the in-person kids, at the same time." COVID-19 is very harsh on the states, countries, and more.
So please, do your part, keep 6 feet apart, wash your hands, and WEAR THE MASK! We can do this!
The Summer of 2020
The summer of 2020 was nothing like anyone could have expected. Despite the unprecedented times, the staff members at Dryden Community Schools worked hard to adjust to online learning and reach out to the students. The Cardinal even did a fly-by and dropped off care packages to all of the students. Perhaps hit worst of all by the sudden shift into quarantine was the graduating class of 2020. Last year’s seniors, unfortunately, had to miss out on some of their end of the year events, including Mr. Dryden and spring sports. Some senior events that were able to be held were prom, graduation, and the senior all-night party.
Prom 2020 wasn’t held at a hall as many had hoped, but with some planning and hard work, it was put on right at Dryden High School. Tents were set up with catered food, a DJ, and socially distanced games like cornhole and ladder golf. Juniors and seniors came and enjoyed the night, and made memories with friends they hadn’t gotten to see in a while. Thank you to everyone who made Prom 2020 possible!
The graduation of the Class of 2020 was not the same as past years either, this time held on the bleachers to the football field with limited guests. Instead of watching the graduates from the crowd, family members were encouraged to tune in to Dryden High School’s Facebook live to watch the event safely from their homes. While the ceremony was not all they may have dreamed of, we still heard wonderful speeches from Salutatorian/Student Council President Kylie DeVlaminck and Valedictorian/Class President Ronny Hudson and heard Angie DeBellis sing the class song “Unwritten”.
Thank you to everyone who worked to make life during the pandemic more fun, interesting, and just that much more bearable. We are all in this together.
Sports
Varsity Volleyball Starts Season Strong
On Thursday, September 10, the Varsity Volleyball team started off their season with victories over Deckerville and CPS. Becca Weiss had a great night and finished the with 32 overall assists. Alyssa Daoud had 10 aces and 3 kills, Avery Grondin had 7 aces and 5 kills, and Erin Boettcher finished with 9 kills and an ace. All of the girls played very well, winning each game 2 sets to 0, and winning each set by 10 points or more.
This week, the Lady Cardinals will be playing Caseville on Tuesday and Peck on Thursday. Next week, the girls will take on Almont on Tuesday, Mayville at home on Tuesday, and Genesee on Thursday. Great job, ladies, and good luck this week!
Cross Country
This past week has been exciting, especially for the Cross Country Team! These past weeks, the team has run at Webberville and Brown City. Sadly, due to the virus, the meet at Webberville did not have spectators nor were you allowed to leave your tent. Masks were required as well. At the Brown City meet, they allowed two spectators per runner and you were allowed to leave your tent, but just had to remember your mask! That definitely made it more enjoyable knowing that there were people there to support you. Besides all of the rules, the team had a great time!
For the Webberville meet there were two heats. In the heat that we were in, Reed Hall and Aiden Fitchett came in first and second! In the Brown City meet, Aiden came in second place and Reed came close behind him in third. Ella Kage also came in first in her race! Overall, the runners did great! Keep up the great work!

Random Student Spotlight
This week in our Random Student Spotlight we have Cody Jackson. Cody is a sophomore at Dryden High School who has been attending Dryden Community Schools for the past 9 years. He enjoys the small community and the fact that he knows everyone in it. Outside of school, Cody enjoys hunting and fishing. After high school, he plans on entering a trade and pursuing a career as a lineman or diesel technician. During the COVID break, Cody started working out a lot, and currently holds the freshman bench press record of 225 lbs as of July. Since then he has brought that total up to 255 lbs. Congratulations, Cody!
