A Note from Ms. Ellison

Dear Glen Grove Families,

Despite all that is swirling around us, at Glen Grove we continue to center our Gator Values of Being Respectful, Being Responsible, and Being Safe. I am amazed how each and every day our students show up and are able to demonstrate these values. As we embark on another change in the school and shift to a mask-recommended, but optional, environment, I am confident that our school community will continue to move forward with care and respect for family decisions. We will be talking to all of our students about change and respect throughout this next phase of pandemic schooling.

Your voice matters! Please take a moment to fill out the Five Essential Survey for Glen Grove. I know that we get lots of surveys in our lives these days, but this one very much matters. In addition to being part of our school report card, our Glen Grove leadership team will analyze the response data for the school to make decisions on how we can continue to improve the school. Also, remember that both caregivers can fill out the survey which helps increase participation rates and gives us more information. Please take a moment to fill out the survey here.

As you know, we are scheduled for parent-teacher conferences in two weeks. If you have not already signed up for a time, please do so. We are going for 100% participation! This is an important time to connect with your child’s teacher and work together so that both home and school can support their growth.

I hope that you enjoy a three-day weekend filled with family, friends, and joy! As always, please reach out to me if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. It is important to partner together so that we can support your child!

Sincerely,

Kate Ellison

The Food Services department is experiencing unprecedented staff shortages. To continue to provide meals to students in this environment, we may need to adjust to a limited menu, removing the hot entree option. This change may happen on any given day, at one or multiple schools. We will provide information to families at a particular school if this does happen, though communication may occur on short notice.

We appreciate your understanding!

2022 - 2023 Math Placements

Math placements for students who will be in 4th through 8th grade next year will be viewable in the parent portal of PowerSchool starting on March 1st. Once you are logged into your child’s account, click on “Math Placement.” If you have any questions, please email the District Math Coach, Jennifer Bergeron, at jbergeron@glenview34.org . You can find more information about student identification on the Math Program Information page of the District website.

From the Nurse's Office

If you need any help or support during this difficult time of the pandemic, please do not hesitate to call Jennifer Hastings, RN, our Health Coordinator, at (847) 657-2394.

All student absences should be called into the health office no later than 7:45 a.m. at (847) 657-2394. The school has voicemail so parents can call the health office to leave messages at any time.

If your children come to school after 7:45 a.m. please have them come through the front office. This is for the safety of all of our students.

Mandatory Health Forms for 2022-2023 Incoming 6th Graders

All incoming 6th grade students MUST have a physical examination (within the last 12 months), including required vaccinations, turned in prior to August 25, 2022. Your child will NOT be able to start middle school until the physical form is turned in. If your child's health forms are already complete, you can turn them into the Glen Grove health office any time between now and the last day of school. They will be forwarded to your child's middle school with their health file. If you have any questions, please call Mrs. Hastings, Health Coordinator, at (847) 657-2394. Click here for the health exam form.

Car Lane Safety Reminder

We know that the car lane is long - especially in the winter! - but PLEASE follow our safety procedures when dropping off and picking up your child. We have staff stationed at Door B at the far end of the parking lot to supervise children getting in and out of cars. Door B is open and staffed until 7:45 am for arrival and until 2:45 pm for dismissal. DO NOT park your car and walk to meet your child. Walking between cars is hazardous to both pedestrians and drivers.

If you are late dropping off or picking up your child, please use Door A by the office.

DO NOT USE THE CIRCULAR DRIVE WHEN THE BUSES ARE THERE! The circular drive is off-limits to cars from 7:15 to 7:45 am and 1:45 to 2:50 pm.

Thank you for helping us keep arrival and dismissal times safe!

Dress for the Weather Every Day

Be sure to check the weather report to make sure your child has everything they need to be warm and dry!

Please note that if there is snow on the ground, recess is as follows:

  • Boots and snowpants - may play in the fields
  • Boots only - must stay on the woodchips (can play on equipment if conditions permit)
  • No boots - must stay on the blacktop

If your child wears boots to school, don't forget to pack gym shoes.

News from the LRC

Overdue Books

Overdue notices are sent weekly to students' email accounts. Students can check their Destiny Discover accounts at any time to see what they currently have checked out or overdue. Also, students can renew titles one time on Destiny. If a title needs to be renewed more than once, the student needs to bring the book to the library so that we can renew it for them. Parents receive overdue notices once a month and do not need to respond to the notice unless they have a question about the overdue title(s).

Books that are 60 days overdue will be considered lost. We ask that parents pay for the lost book(s) with a check payable to Glen Grove School. If the book(s) is found within the current school year, we are happy to refund the money. The cost of the book(s) is included in the overdue notice. Any questions, please contact the LRC Associate, Mrs. Pam Duby, she is happy to assist you.

Need a Book?

Please stop by Glen Grove School at any time to visit our Little Free Library located outside the school to the right of the front doors. Take what you need, feel free to just borrow or keep the books. Do you have books you don’t need anymore? Feel free to donate to the Little Library. We just ask that the books are in good condition for others to enjoy.

So many lost items. Please help them find their way home.

Our Lost and Found is located in the lunchroom - and it's filling up! If your child is missing a medium-to-large sized item - a jacket, a water bottle, hats, gloves, boots - please ask them to check there. If they are missing a smaller or valuable item - eyeglasses, jewelry, keys, phone - please have them check the Little Lost & Found in the office.

Please help us by writing your child's name on their belongings whenever possible! Thank you.

Staffing Shortages: How You Can Help

District 34 still is experiencing critical staffing shortages and the need for substitute teachers continues to be high. Becoming a short-term substitute teacher is one easy way to help our schools and students. A short-term substitute teacher only needs:

  • 60 university/college credits in any content area
  • To complete a required three-hour training ($25)
  • Get a Short-Term Sub license with ISBE ($25)

The North Cook Intermediate Service Center (our regional office of education) is hosting a session of the required training on March 4, 2022 from 12:00-3:30 p.m on Zoom. Preregistration is required. Register here.

Once you have your license, fill out the substitute application here.

Please contact Veronica Kagan if you have any questions regarding the District 34 application.
