Happy Friday, Lil Steamer Families!

"If you don't behave, I'm going to call the cops!"
This is a phrase used at times by parents who are frustrated with their child's behavior. In an effort to correct their behavior, they make the statement and may even mention the child being hauled off to jail. That consequence is far greater than timeouts, grounding, or spanking.
But the unintended result of that statement, simply being used to correct a misbehaving child, is the negative association with law enforcement. Children then associate law enforcement as those who enact punishment, instead of their intended purpose: to protect and serve.
My earliest memory of law enforcement was in elementary school with the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program. I can still remember Officer Rhoades coming into the classroom to teach us. I was amazed by his utility belt (I thought at night he patrolled the streets like Batman), the awesome D.A.R.E. car that he drove, and being able to yell "Ahhhh-EWWWWW-guhhhh!" as a class down the hallway after we had a great session! But more than that, he was able to show us the side of law enforcement that many times gets overlooked: kindness, caring, and compassion.
Those same qualities that Officer Rhoades displayed many years ago in our school are now displayed by School Resource Officer Leitzen. Just this week he was building those postive relationships with our Kindergarten students as he read the book "Monsters New Undies" to them, which was chosen by the library staff to entice laughter. Our hope is that all of our students come to realize they can go to law enforcement anytime they are concerned about their safety or well-being. But first they have to have a positive, trusting relationship built to feel safe to do so.
Help us teach our kiddos about all of the good things law enforcement does for us. Help us break through the negative stigma that has been reported many times in the news. Help us keep our schools safe by encouraging students to view law enforcement as protectors.

From the Desk of: Counselor Mrs. Meumann
This weeks lessons with 5th grade focused on communication skills. We discussed the differences between passive, assertive, and aggressive communication styles. We practiced being assertive, which involves facing the person you are talking to, keeping your head up, using a calm, firm voice, and using respectful words.
Kindergarten Agriculture
The students had their first session on Monday and really enjoyed Mrs. Baker coming and talking to us! The students were able to taste test different kinds of apples at the end of the presentation.

Why Do You Like School?
The bulletin board in the hallway recently asked, "Why Do You Like School?" Students, Faculty, and Staff
all responded with why they liked school. Some of their responses were, friends, Art, reading, math, recess, stories, fun, learning, and Ben! All GREAT reasons to like FES!
Veterans Day
We are looking for Veterans who would be willing to come into the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes on Friday, November 8 beginning at approximately 12:30pm. We are hoping to find Veterans who would speak about the branch of the military that they have served or are serving in, how long they have served or are currently serving, and a memory or story that they would like to share. This time can also include an opportunity for the students to ask questions. We are hoping to give our Veterans an opportunity to speak about their experiences in a smaller setting. Each Veteran would be assigned to a grade level (3, 4, or 5) and would spend about 15 minutes in each homeroom section for that grade. Each Veteran would speak to approximately 20-27 students at a time. Following this time devoted to hearing from our Veterans, the entire school will participate in a tribute to the Veterans and their service to our country.
A note for people to sign up was sent home with the youngest in each family at the elementary school. If you did not receive this, and you are or have someone interested in participating, please contact the school.
If you have any questions, you can contact Mrs. Alexander, Mrs. Marten, Mrs. Strehlow, or Mr. Hoese at (815)589-2911.
