Ms. Harris' Weekly Update
February 12th-16th
What's Going On This Week:
- Ms. Harris' Science: This week students will continue exploring the sun and how our tilt and orbit cause seasons. They will take part in a science court case using the information that they are learning. On Friday, we will take a quiz over Lessons 1-3.
- Ms. Harris' Social Studies: In Social Studies, we will continue looking at the Constitution and the Constitutional Convention. On Friday, students must be able to recite the Preamble to the Constitution for a quiz grade. They have an opportunity to practice and gain extra credit points by reciting the preamble throughout the week to an adult. The extra credit will also be due on Friday.
- Mrs. Thurston's Math/ELA: This week we are continuing our new unit, Reading History – The American Revolution, specifically starting to research history to help us write our conglomerate! We will also continue our writing unit, Bringing History to Life, specifically focusing on chapter 2 of our informational writing book (conglomerate). These will be due on Friday where we will have a writing celebration! Spelling tests will be given this week starting on Tuesday and ending on Friday. Your child has a tab of their scheduled test day in his/her spelling notebook. Spelling homework is due on their test day. In math this week we will continue our measurement unit. We will be learning about customary length this week ending with a quiz on Friday.
- Ms. Harris' Math/ELA: In ELA this week students will be creating book trailers for our Valentine's Day presentation of "Books We Love". They will also be finalizing their independent novels which will be due on Friday. There is no spelling this week but students will have a Word of the Day quiz Friday over their last 20 words. In math, we will be finishing up elapsed time and then starting linear measurement. Students will start with customary/standard units like inches, feet, yards, and miles. We will then spend time later in this unit converting between metric units. This is a very hard concept for children, so the more practice they can do at home recognizing objects and the units used to measure them, the easier this will be. Example: a door is around 7 feet tall, a tree is around 50-60 feet tall or 20 yards
