Thank you for all of the donations for math this year....
Homework
Generally, your child will have math homework Monday through Thursday. Fourth graders will have Continental Math League (CML) problems, problem solving with riddles, or word problems that will be assigned on a Friday and will be due the following Friday. Math homework is an important part of your child’s learning. Each day’s homework assignment consists of a few math problems similar to what we learned in class that day and/or a review of previously taught concepts. For this to be of value to your child, I am asking you to review your child’s homework, help them find any mistakes made, and recheck his/her work after corrections are made. Reviewing homework with your child will help him/her to understand the importance of working towards accuracy. Celebrate the variety of ways your child is able to solve problems. The math standards require our students to use many strategies when finding answers. Math homework will come home in their math FOCUS folder. Complete the homework and then return it the following day. Please remind them to bring home the MATH FOCUS folder daily. If you have any questions about how to help your child, please contact me.
When students arrive to my room, they should take out their homework from the previous night and place it on the corner of their desk. Then, they write down their homework on their homework sheet (2nd gr) or in their agenda (4th/5th gr.). Second graders will put their homework sheet back in their folder. Homework will given at the end of class.
If there is ever a night without assigned math homework, please have students work on their math fluency by solving basic addition and subtraction facts (2nd graders). Fourth and fifth graders will solve basic multiplication and division facts.
Students need to have their math journals daily as well. Students should bring home their math journals to review the notes that we have taken that day. Plus, if they bring their math journals home, you will be able to see what we are learning. Just be sure to return it daily, so that they will have it for math class. We glue all our notes in there.
Math is more than just steps and procedures. Math requires our students to reason, problem solve, and write effectively to communicate their thinking. Please be sure to help your student reason through word problems by using a variety of strategies to solve including answering questions by use of numbers, words, and/or pictures.
Finally, if students do not have their math homework and/or math materials, they will receive a check note. The check note is a way to communicate with you about work habits and behaviors. Please sign this note and return it the next day with missing homework completed.
out graded papers and keep/recycle them. Second graders should always have a homework sheet in their folder for writing down their homework. Sometimes, students will have incomplete work in their folders that will need to be completed later. Please ask students before you throw away incomplete and/or ungraded work. Thank you so much.

2nd Grade
This week in second grade we used base ten blocks for the pictorial representation (model) and discussed place value in the hundreds, tens, and ones place to generate the standard form. we learned about two ways to write numbers: standard form and expanded form. On Friday, we took our first graded assignment. It should be in there math folder or their Friday folder from their classrooms.
Next week we will learn more about word form and expanded form.
Second graders have rocked these first two weeks! Keep up the great work!
4th Grade
Next week, we will compare numbers through the millions place.
Fourth graders have done an awesome job with the first two weeks of school. I'm looking forward to a great year!
5th Grade
Next week, we will learn division. We will use the area model as a strategy and move into the standard division algorithm. The algorithm has a many steps. Please review their math journals and homework with them nightly.
Fifth graders have done a super job thus far! Keep it up!
