Florence Sawyer School Happenings
Monday, October 29, 2018
Principal's Message
Dear Parents,
I'd like to start by thanking all of you that were able to come out this past week for our Parent-Teacher Conferences. For those of you coming in next week (on Monday), you can access Pick-A-Time and review your schedule at the following link FSS Pick-A-Time 2018 Fall Conferences. The 8th grade will be providing babysitting during conferences on Monday, November 5. Donations benefit the 8th grade end of the year activities and the Washington, DC trip. Students will also be selling wreaths and poinsettias for the winter season in the Sawyer Wing lobby during conferences.
In last week's Happenings, I inadvertently left Vera Leverone's name off the Golden Eagles List for grade 1. Congratulations Vera; thanks for being a great role model!
In FSS Athletics, our cross country team was victorious in the intra-district race held at Nashoba Regional High School last week. As a result, for the first time in NRSD history, the Florence Sawyer Eagles hold all three district middle school championship cups (cross country, basketball, track) at the same time! Please join me in congratulating all of the runners and coaches Corey Brownell and Gary Kozloski. Basketball signups are now open. Please use the following link. Sawyer Winter Athletics Information and Sign-up Link
Next Monday, November 5, we will hold a lockdown drill with all of our students. The drill will take place in the morning. We will let the students know in advance and practice prior to the drill where they should go and what they should do. When discussing why we do these drills with our students, we try to be developmentally appropriate while also being honest and practical. This perspective is captured in the following post, "My School's New Emergency Plan Includes Lockdown Drills. How Can We Keep Them From Scaring the Kids." from the Child Mind Institute. I will send a school messenger email and text letting you know when the drill begins and follow that with another when it is concluded.
This Friday, November 2, the Annual PAC Family Bingo Night will take place in our cafeteria! Don’t forget to buy your tickets for Family Bingo. Doors open at 6:00 PM. The first 150 kids 12 & under who arrive on Friday will receive a free kids meal card from Chick-fil-A in Marlboro. We will NOT be selling tickets at the door so please get them now. You can find the order form here. Family Bingo Ticket Order Form. We will also be selling raffle tickets for the baskets during lunches this Thursday & Friday. Raffle tickets cost $1 each/$5 for 6 tickets or $10 for 15 tickets.
Friday, November 9, we will host the first FSS Dodgeball Tournament in the Sawyer Wing Gym for middle school students as a fundraiser for the 8th grade trip to Washington, DC. Students can sign up with Mrs. Cavaioli. We thank you for supporting the 8th grade class.
On Wednesday, November 14, FSS will be hosting one of three district Parent Information Nights; The New Look of Nicotine Addiction, Vaping and our Youth What You Should Know. More information follows below.
Sawyer School Staff invites you to dine with us and more at our annual Pasta pARTy scholarship fundraiser. Enjoy a delicious meal prepared and served by your child’s teachers. This year’s dinner, art show, musical display and craft sale will be Thursday, November 15. Order your tickets now using this link...November 15, 2018 Pasta pARTy ticket form
We are seeking Parent Volunteers to assist with our brand new Book Room in the Sawyer wing! As part of our new district-wide literacy initiative, our staff has spent hours sorting through and organizing our collection of books. The book room will be open to all teachers, thus giving every student access to a huge selection of wonderful books to read every day. Now that we're organized, we'd love your help to get it all up and running! Tasks that still need to be completed are: laminating bin labels, applying stickers to books and bookshelves, and (the most daunting task of all!) inventorying our huge collection of books. If you have a few free hours, and, especially if you have experience typing and using Google Sheets/Excel, we would love your help! Please sign up here, or reach out to one of our literacy specialists to get more information: Katie Salois--ksalois@nrsd.net, Liz West--ewest@nrsd.net, or Genie Collins--ecollins@nrsd.net. Thank you in advance to our wonderful Sawyer parents!
Yours in partnership,
Joel Bates,
Principal
