Virtual Parent/Teacher Conferences Sign-up Closes TODAY at 9 p.m.
Parent/Teacher Conferences will be virtual this fall and will not take place in the school building. They will be held on the following dates:
Monday, Oct. 12, 12:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.
Tuesday, Oct. 13, 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
The sign-up session for conferences closes TODAY, Oct. 8 at 9:00 p.m.
Conferences for all grades should be scheduled using the online conference scheduler. As there are limited spots available, we ask that School of Grammar families schedule only with their classroom teacher and any specialists (music, Latin, art, phys ed) they would like to meet with.
Please note, you will need to know which teachers you would like to schedule a conference with prior to logging into the scheduler, as the scheduler will not link your child to their teachers. Your childβs teachers may be found under the schedule tab in the left index in your Infinite Campus parent portal. If you need assistance logging into the Infinite Campus Parent Portal, please contact Janice Gerheart. Please use the master password that was sent via email Sept. 9 to log into the conference scheduler. If you have not used the conference scheduler in the past year, you will need to create a user account.
Please visit this page using the Conference Scheduler password to view all teacher Zoom links for conferences, as well as additional conferences information.
Letter from the Executive Director
I am so excited for our students, families, and especially our staff to have a much needed fall break! The recess allows us to reexamine and reset some of our priorities at ERA. One of the opportunities we are researching is the possibility to have the kindergarten class learn in person. Presently, 67% of MN schools have their kindergarten students onsite, most commonly because hybrid learning is less effective with younger children. Our kindergarten teachers, as well as many kindergarten families, have communicated that this has been their experience. Thus, we have begun to research whether or not kindergarten should transition from Hybrid to In-Person.
Our research will include:
Β· Conducting kindergarten family surveys and conversations
Β· Consulting with our safety experts
Β· Reviewing all operational factors, including food service, transportation, and transitions
Β· Ultimately, discussing the prospect with the Eagle Ridge Academy Board of Directors
To begin, we ask that all kindergarten families please take a short survey, which will be coming out after Fall Break. We will follow up by engaging in conversation after the survey responses have been gathered.
Right now we are in the ideation and research phase. Our first priority is safety and, to date, we have been safe. If we determine that we are able to safely transition kindergarten to in-person learning, and they are successful in that mode, we may then consider additional primary grades.
Other ERA updates:
- The HVAC system has been updated with plasma ionization units. This increases the MERV value by 5. MERV, otherwise known as Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, is a system used to evaluate the efficiency of an air filter based on how effective it is at catching particles of varying sizes. We have MERV 8 filters that now perform as MERV 13 filters, which is the recommendation from the CDC.
- The target date for completion of the gymnasium is March 1, 2021.
Enjoy this well-deserved break!
Sincerely,
Jason Ulbrich
Community Updates
Schools of Logic & Rhetoric Notes - Erin Johnson, Principal
Despite all the changes we made for this school year, we werenβt going to let the current situation disrupt a Homecoming celebration! The Eagle Ridge Academy Student Senate figured out ways to incorporate Homecoming into the mix while still abiding by health and safety protocols. Thank you for your support of the Spirit Week activities and for our Girls and Boys Varsity Soccer games this week! You can still catch the boysβ game tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 9, at 4:15 p.m. at the International School of Minnesota.
CLT and PSAT: Please take special note! The CLT will be offered on Tuesday, Oct. 20 to all 9th and 10th grade students. On this day, all 11th and 12th grade students will participate in distance learning so we can make sure all 9th and 10th grade students can take this test uninterrupted and physically distanced. The PSAT will be offered to all 11th grade students on Thursday, Oct. 29. On this day, all 9th, 10th, and 12th grade students will participate in distance learning so we can accommodate all 11th grade students and they can take their test uninterrupted and physically distanced. This is a paper/pencil test, as mandated by CollegeBoard; and therefore, all juniors, including those who traditionally are attending school through Distance Learning, will be taking this test in the building.
Please take a moment to sign up to attend your childrenβs conferences. This is a good way to check in face-to-face with your children's teachers and continue to support your child(ren)βs learning. Conferences are next week on Monday, Oct. 12 from 12:00-8:00 p.m. and Tuesday, Oct. 13, 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. The conference scheduler is now open and emails regarding sign-up have been sent out.
With this change to providing students with both synchronous and asynchronous instruction during the week, I want to clarify Friday expectations. Asynchronous instruction was the primary mode of instruction last spring. However, the Department of Education's recent guidelines for schools recommends synchronous instruction as much as possible, which is why most classes are taught via livestream with Zoom. Fridays, despite not being livestreamed, are still considered a school day for attendance reporting purposes. This means that teachers are still posting assignments that are to be completed during the school day; students complete those assignments and turn them in, which is how teachers track and report attendance. The key is that these assignments are to be done during a traditional school day, 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. If your child is not able to attend to those assignments during that time period, they are considered absent. If you know your child will be unable to attend (i.e. appointment, family commitment, etc.), please fill out a planned absence request form seven days prior. This is similar to what you would do if we were in full in-person instruction. Please treat Fridays as you would any other school day and notify the office if your child is ill or if your child is unable to complete the work assigned on that day as you would all other school days.
Sincerely,
Erin Johnson
School of Grammar Notes - Janelle Mellgren, Principal
School of Grammar Families,
I hope you are all well and are looking forward to our Virtual Parent/Teacher Conferences and Fall Break. We are excited to connect with each of you and have a bit of a break, too!
As Iβve reflected on our school year so far, I realized that this is my twentieth year in education. My first official classroom teaching job was as a 1st/2nd grade combination teacher in Garden Grove, California in the year 2000. One thing I learned as I gained experience with each year of teaching was, even though each group of students every year is unique and has their own identity, there is always a rhythm to the school year for both them and the teacher.
Typically, the school year begins on a high note as everyone is excited to be back, learning, and beginning the routine of the school year. After about a month, students and staff tend to settle into the routine and relax. Academic content increases a bit, which is when we usually begin to hit the first lull of the year. For me, a lull is when student frustration and pushing back on boundaries sometimes increases, which usually requires a reaffirmation of boundaries and expectations. During my first few years, I found this part of the lull very hard because I felt mean. As I learned and grew in my profession, I realized that in fact, I was helping students feel safe because they saw they could trust what I said. I told them the expectation, supported them as they learned, and followed through with natural consequencesβeven when it was not what I wanted to do. This learning has served me well over my twenty years as a teacher and administrator because it helped me realize that an important part of caring for my students was being an adult in their lives worthy of their trust.
Given most of you, as parents, are serving a much different role this year in your homeβboth as parent and education supporterβI hope you will be able to take some encouragement from my learning over the years. Donβt be discouraged when lulls happen; there are often about four-six, depending on the year. A few things that help are patience (often harder to come by during lulls, at least for me), consistency, and repetition, which is, after all, how children learn. I always try to remind myself during the lulls that part of what our children are learning as they grow is how to make good choices. Thus, I shouldnβt expect them to be βadultsβ just yet. I truly believe that you are getting a very unique peek into what a school year looks like from the inside this year. Please know that we are here to help and support you as weβre able. I consider it such a privilege to be a part of your childβs education. Thank you for helping me continue to grow and learn in my professional education journey.
Kind Regards,
Ms. Janelle Mellgren
Silver Linings - Kris Babler, Director of Activities
In a normal year, I would write about the changing seasons, fall tournaments, and the upcoming assortment of opportunities for our students. This year has known no normalcy. Our studentsβ experience these last months has been marked by tumult, rapid change, and constant uncertainty.
This is why I was overcome with joy watching the positivity and adaptation of our students. Khaia and Anna, members of the Gryphon girlsβ soccer team, had traditionally played volleyball in the fall. When the MSHSL moved volleyball to the spring, these young women chose to try a new sport and a new team.
The Citizen, the excellently written student newspaper, could not function normally in the year of COVID-19. So, Erik and Muthu, who write and edit for the paper, spearheaded a student podcast to continue telling the student story.
The point is that these students, and many more, have found ways to grow, learn, and overcome during a time of adversity, which is exactly the kind of thing we want to teach through our Activities department and as a school.
*Notes:
- Soccer and Cross Country seasons conclude in the next two weeks.
- Volleyball has moved back to a fall season and we open Friday night at home.
- The Math Team has begun practicing and will be utilizing a donation-based funding model this year β check them out!
- Look for registration for a virtual Mock Trial program and basketball offerings in the coming weeks.
Go Gryphons!

Sign up for Mock Trial by Friday, Oct. 16
COVID-19 has shut down many plans, activities, and events this year, but Mock Trial is definitely on! All competitions will be virtual, but we believe that we can provide an enriching and exciting mock trial experience this year.
Mock trial is an extracurricular program in which students compete in rehearsed trials against other high school teams to learn about the legal system in a competitive manner and to exercise critical thinking, rhetoric, and teamwork skills. Students act out a civil or criminal trial by arguing for either the prosecution or defense side against another team, which acts as the opposing side.
Students can take attorney roles, where they analyze case material, argue objections, and give statements; or they can take witness roles, where they learn and portray a character in court and answer tough questions from the opposition. A team consists of anywhere from 6-12 students: 3 attorneys for the plaintiff, 3 attorneys for the defense, 3 witnesses for the plaintiff, and 3 witnesses for the defense.
This will be our third year as a school competing in the Minnesota State Bar Associationβs High School Mock Trial program. We had great success last year β all of our mockers developed their skills tremendously and gained invaluable experience through the season, and one of our teams went all the way to the State Tournament and took third place in Minnesota.
Beyond all of this, the most valuable parts of Mock Trial are the relationships you form and the skills you learn. Dressing up and going to courtrooms with your friends, scrambling to find papers before a trial, forgetting what you were saying halfway through an objection argumentβthese are all every mockerβs fondest memories.
Mock Trial can work around your schedule, too. Doing a fall sport and canβt commit too much time? No worries! Weβve got a lighter commitment team that isnβt as competition-focused as the other teams. Have lots of free time? Great! You can prepare, commit, and try for our top team!
If you have any questions ask Muthu Meenakshisundaram, Bella Vander Lugt, Henry Long, Nathaniel Grube, Edward Mnuskin, Greta Long, or any one of the many ERA Mockers. Canβt track us down? Ask our Mock Trial Advisor, Mr. Magnuson at jmagnuson@eagleridgeacademy.org. If you're ready to register, then please visit this link: https://era-ar.rschooltoday.com/home.
Give Mock Trial a shot this year! Weβd love to have you on the team.
Sincerely,
Eagle Ridge Academy Mockers
