Ken Burns in the Classroom
Ken Burns and his collaborators have been creating historical documentary films for more than forty years. Known for a signature style that brings primary source documents, images, and archival video footage to life on screen, these films present the opportunity to pose thought-provoking questions for students, and introduce new ideas, perspectives, and primary sources.

Create Engaging Videos with Clips
Apple Education Learning Series presents:
Clips is a free app that lets educators and students easily create and share fun and engaging videos. We’ll show you how educators can use Clips to create instructional videos for exploring new skills and ideas — and how students can make videos to share what they’ve learned.
https://video.ibm.com/recorded/126439618
This series is presented by the Apple Education Leadership and Learning teams. Each video is designed to help educators use Apple products and their built-in features to enable remote learning for all students.
As a follow-up to the series, educators can also participate in virtual conferences led by Apple Professional Learning Specialists. Visit the virtual conferences schedule to find events in your time zone. Each virtual conference will run for approximately 45 minutes and will provide an opportunity for educators to engage in dialogue with our teams about the content provided in each video.
Having a good plan for Personalizing Feedback Online can be challenging
If you are working with older or secondary students (and of course parents), Calendly helps you schedule meetings without the back-and-forth emails. My department uses Doodle. There are many scheduling tools out there, just find one you like to use with your students to schedule personal meeting or class meeting or whatever.
Another option is to do Video Comments with a Screen recorder like Screencastify. Especially if you cannot require students to attend a live feedback session or maybe you want to give students a choice between synchronous and asynchronous feedback. In that case, you can record a short screencast using Screencastify or any screen recording tool, I have a list of screen records tools in my newsletter Think Different #124 https://www.smore.com/ar604 to give students feedback on their work. The free version of Screencastify allows users to record shrt, no more than 3-5 minute videos.
How to do it:
- Open up your students’ work on your computer screen
- Click the Screencastify Chrome Extension,
- Select desktop recording, and record feedback.
- As you provide feedback, you can highlight and point out specific elements of the student’s work, so the feedback is easy for them to follow.
- When finished, it will save automatically in Google Drive.
- Share the link to the recording directly with the student.
- Personal feedback acomplished.
Create Quiz Questions That Engage Your Students
We are all looking for new ways to assess and ENGAGE our students, esp[ecially now. I follow Monica Burns of Class Tech Tips, everywhere. Blog, Twitter, Instgram, Facebook, Pinterest.
Yesterday, she had this little quiz. Monica used a tool called Interact. It was very engaging. Here is the link to the one Monca used yesterday, very cool and I seriously think it might engage your kiddos if you make your own.
Take Monica's new quiz to find the answer to the question: Which EdTech tool are you? Here's the link: https://bit.ly/WhichEdTechToolAreYou
There are 800+ Pre-Made quiz templates to choose from and edit or you can make your own.
Once you choose a quiz template you can edit the whole thing and add your own branding and change any part of it from the questions to the images. Using a quiz template to start with can save hours or days of work and you'll be using quizzes that are already built to be the most effective possible.
Interact is a tool for creating online quizzes that generate leads, segment your audience, and drive traffic or engage students.

Maximizing Teaching and Learning in the “New Normal”, Be prepared for Fall

In recent weeks, lives have been altered like never before. Educators are no exception. School systems and teachers have met this unprecedented challenge with relentless work and creativity to meet the needs of their students. Now is the time to step back and take stock of where we are and where we want to be.
The current threat to our public health will end at some point, but what we have learned about meeting the needs of our students will continue to affect the way we teach and the way students learn. To assist with this process, the College of Education at Kansas State University would like to offer teachers, pre-service teachers, tech coaches, administrators, and other education personnel access to our Online Teaching and Learning Certificate. These 3 classes, designed to be taken as a group, are also part of a 4 class, 12 hour certificate program. Because of the unique situation with Covid-19, we are offering scholarships for all those who are striving to maximize teaching and learning in the digital setting.
This summer, the College of Education is offering the first 9 credit hours of the Online Teaching and Learning Certificate. With your pre-approved scholarship, your total cost will be substantially reduced. In this workshop, participants will be exploring the technical logistics pedagogy, and underlying issues at the heart of this “new normal” of teaching.
However, if you want to hone in on specific aspects of Online Teaching and Learning, K-State’s College of Education is also offering micro-sessions on specific topics. You can earn badges recognizing your professional development. These specific sessions will allow participants to explore facets of online learning and the opportunity to earn a microcredential in Online Teaching and Learning for professional development. Microcredentials are not credit bearing.
