A Dash of Salt - How to Stay Calm
Disappointments are a part of life. Whether it's the person who steals your parking spot or the person who doesn't pull forward in the drop-off lane, it's essential to remain calm, level-headed, and keep our composure as best as we can. Might you be relieved to hear that anger is a healthy emotion?
So, how do you stay calm when people and kids make what we think are foolish positions? Today's episode will help you understand the brain and the three states your body goes through. Knowing this will aid you in staying calm and make it appear you have ice in your veins, no matter what your child does.

February is fast approaching and we have a lot planned!
Spencer Elementary Food Drive
Our Annual Food Drive benefitting Bountiful Harvest will be kicking off on February 7th and will run through the 28th. This is always a fun competition for the kids. Whichever class racks up the most points by the end of the month will win a small prize from the PTO. Donations will be collected and counted weekly to assign points. Please take a look at the attached flier for the most needed (aka DOUBLE POINT) items. NO GLASS PLEASE!
STEAM Night
The Family event for this month is STEAM Night. We have moved this to a virtual event. We will be having a live zoom event with Leslie Science Center on February 17th at 6:30pm. The show will be one hour long. We will be sending home materials lists for the live show so your student(s) can participate in the experiments along with the presenter (or on their own later!) In addition to this fun event for all, if your student would still like to create their OWN experiment to show their friends, we will gladly accept videos of their presentations to be shared on a Google Drive, similar to Talent Show videos. Look for an information sheet regarding STEAM Night next week.
PTO Meeting
The next PTO Meeting is February 8th at 4:00pm. Childcare will be provided.
As always, please check out our Facebook page and/or website for the most up to date information this year.

Note From the Counselor
Counselor Corner!
Happy New Year from your Elementary Counselor, Mrs. McKiddy! We hope you had a well rested, and memory filled, time with your loved ones. For the month of January we are diving into mindfulness, yoga, and other practices that treat the mind, body, and soul. The goal of these lessons is to promote self-regulation and self-reflection in our young learners, as well as to practice a sense of peace and calm during our days.
Lets Connect: If you are noticing some behaviors that are interfering with your child’s success in the classroom, please feel free to complete my parent referral form and we can work together to determine if supports are needed here at school.
More Resources: We also have our BAS Elementary Counseling website for ideas and resources to be used at home!
