A Dash of Salt - How to Stay Calm

Disappointments are a part of life. Whether it's the person who steals your parking spot or the person who doesn't pull forward in the drop-off lane, it's essential to remain calm, level-headed, and keep our composure as best as we can. Might you be relieved to hear that anger is a healthy emotion?
So, how do you stay calm when people and kids make what we think are foolish positions? Today's episode will help you understand the brain and the three states your body goes through. Knowing this will aid you in staying calm and make it appear you have ice in your veins, no matter what your child does.

Remember Your Family Pass

Please remember to bring your Family Pass with you each day you come to pick up your student. We frequently have substitute teachers that will not recognize you and will send you to the office to get a temporary pass. Lee Ann and I also ask that you also bring your Family Pass with you when you sign out your student from the office. If you forget your pass, you will need to bring in a photo ID. Thank you for your cooperation.

Calling in a Covid-19 Related Absence (Updated)

When calling in your student's positive Covid -19 case, or to report that they are a close contact to a positive case in the home, it would greatly help us if you could give us the dates of either 1) symptom onset or 2) the date of the positive test result. This will help us to calculate a date of return for your student. We ask that you still follow the new reporting procedure explained in the next section, by submitting the Google Form to BAS. Thank you for your help with this as it will eliminate us having to call you to find out pertinent information.

**UPDATE**

When calling in to report that your student in a close contact to a positive case in the home, please let us know if your child can isolate from the positive case and the last date of contact with the positive case. Thank you.

New COVID-19 Reporting Procedure

(NEW) Process for Parents to Report a Positive Student COVID-19 Case

Do Not Send Your Child to School If...

In the age of COVID-19 that we are living in, you can help keep all safe with a few easy steps:

If your child has any illness symptoms such as,

  • Fever over 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit

  • Cough

  • Shortness of breath

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Other early symptoms, including chills, body aches, sore throat, loss of taste or smell, headache, diarrhea, and nausea/ vomiting.

Stay home!

In addition, if someone in your household has recently been tested for COVID-19 and awaiting the results, we ask that you keep everyone home until the results are in.

We Could Use Your Help

Volunteer Opportunities

We are looking for a few volunteers to assist with some tasks at Spencer, specifically in 4 areas...

1) The Food Pantry - we are looking for a volunteer to periodically clean out and organize the Food Pantry located outside near Door #1.

2) The Free Library - we are looking for a volunteer to periodically organize the Free Library located outside near Door #1.

3) The Lost & Found - we are looking for volunteer(s) to periodically go through the Lost & Found which is located off the playground outside Door #21, and look for items that might have a name in them so we can get them back to the owner, post pictures of the items on the Spencer PTO Facebook page, and donate unclaimed items.

Thank you to Mrs. Kivisto who volunteered to handle the Spencer sign! We appreciate you!!

Please call the office if you are able to lend a hand in any one of these areas. Your help is greatly appreciated.

MASKS ARE NEEDED ON THE BUS!

If your student only rides the bus in the afternoon, please remember to send a mask in with them. We are seeing an increase in kids coming in to the office at the end of the day to get a mask because one was forgotten, and our supply of extra masks is running low.

February is fast approaching and we have a lot planned!

Spencer Elementary Food Drive

Our Annual Food Drive benefitting Bountiful Harvest will be kicking off on February 7th and will run through the 28th. This is always a fun competition for the kids. Whichever class racks up the most points by the end of the month will win a small prize from the PTO. Donations will be collected and counted weekly to assign points. Please take a look at the attached flier for the most needed (aka DOUBLE POINT) items. NO GLASS PLEASE!

STEAM Night

The Family event for this month is STEAM Night. We have moved this to a virtual event. We will be having a live zoom event with Leslie Science Center on February 17th at 6:30pm. The show will be one hour long. We will be sending home materials lists for the live show so your student(s) can participate in the experiments along with the presenter (or on their own later!) In addition to this fun event for all, if your student would still like to create their OWN experiment to show their friends, we will gladly accept videos of their presentations to be shared on a Google Drive, similar to Talent Show videos. Look for an information sheet regarding STEAM Night next week.

PTO Meeting

The next PTO Meeting is February 8th at 4:00pm. Childcare will be provided.

As always, please check out our Facebook page and/or website for the most up to date information this year.

Note From the Counselor

Counselor Corner!

Happy New Year from your Elementary Counselor, Mrs. McKiddy! We hope you had a well rested, and memory filled, time with your loved ones. For the month of January we are diving into mindfulness, yoga, and other practices that treat the mind, body, and soul. The goal of these lessons is to promote self-regulation and self-reflection in our young learners, as well as to practice a sense of peace and calm during our days.

Lets Connect: If you are noticing some behaviors that are interfering with your child’s success in the classroom, please feel free to complete my parent referral form and we can work together to determine if supports are needed here at school.

More Resources: We also have our BAS Elementary Counseling website for ideas and resources to be used at home!
