Principal's Message

October was a busy month at H & M Potter School! Thank you for your participation in the Global Cardboard Challenge, Terror in the Halls, and Halloween festivities. We are looking forward to more fun in November with our JDRF Walk, and other events. We are also very happy to welcome back Mrs. Gallagher on November 1.

Please remember that school will be closed for our Fall Break from November 4-8. We will resume class on Monday November 11. If you have not yet signed up for a Parent Teacher Conference time, please log in to the Parent Portal to do so. Conferences will be on November 25 and 26.

As always, we are thankful for our amazing Potter Family, and we wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving.

Dental Update

TenderSmiles mobile dentist saw 37 students on October 4th! Cleanings, dental exams, x-rays and sealants were provided right here at Potter School. TenderSmiles also provided cleanings, fluoride rinses and a dental exam to students without dental insurance.

Cavities are THE MOST COMMON chronic disease affecting children ages 5-7 years old. Dental guidelines call for children to visit a dentist by 1 year of age.

Untreated tooth decay can cause pain and infections that can lead to problems with eating, speaking, playing and learning.

The next mobile dentist visit is scheduled for April 2020. If you are interested in learning more about this program, contact Mrs. Olsen, RN at ext 5005.

Cold and Flu

The season is upon us. All preschool students who have NOT turned 5 years of age by December 31st, must receive a flu vaccine in order to return to school on January 6th. Contact your health care provider as soon as possible to get your child vaccinated.

How sick is too sick for school?

Keep your child home if they..

  • Are throwing up or have diarrhea.
  • Have a temperature greater than 100
  • Have pink, crusty eyes.
  • Have a persistent cough unrelieved by asthma medicine or cold medicine.
Send your child to school if they...

  • Have a little runny nose or little cough
  • Haven't thrown up, had diarrhea or taken any fever-reducing medicine in 24 hours.

Always call your health care provider if you have any questions about your child's health.

Four Hour Sessions

Due to Parent/Teacher Conferences and the Thanksgiving holiday November 25, 26, and 27 will be four hour sessions for the students. On these days students will attend school from 9:15-1:15.

Terror in the Halls

Thank you to Mrs. Richie, Mrs. Coletti, the Potter PTA and volunteers for a record breaking Terror in the Halls. This year we scared over 1450 people, and had over 175 people for the Lights on Tour. This broke our previous record! Thank you to all those who participated or attended.

The Giving Tree

The annual H & M Potter Giving Tree will be in place and available starting the week of November 18. This community project has been a successful part of the school culture for many years, providing holiday gifts to Potter children.

During parent teacher conferences feel free to take an ornament off of the giving tree. The ornament will have the child’s age and gender. All gifts purchased should be returned to Potter’s Main Office unwrapped with the tag clearly visible by December 9. Donations of wrapping paper would also be appreciated.

Report Cards

Report cards can be viewed on the Parent Portal on November 16. Please review the report card carefully.

Grade four can achieve the Honor Roll by obtaining a 90 or better in all academic areas, and at least a 3 in all special subjects. For Honor Roll students must not receive a Needs Improvement in in any sub skills or behaviors that support learning.

Schoolhouse Homework Help

Schoolhouse is a homework and academic skills program that is funded by the Berkeley Township School District.

Schoolhouse runs Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00-5:30 PM at

235 Magnolia Ave. South Toms River.

November dates: 12, 14, 18, 19, and 21

PTA Fundraiser- Got Sneakers?

Shoe Collections Drive

H&M Potter PTA is continuing our annual sneaker drive fundraiser. In the spirit of environmental and economic sustainability, we have partnered with GotSneakers, a sneaker recycling organization, which will compensate H&M Potter $1.00 for every pair of wearable sneakers and cleats, and $0.10 per pair for all other styles and conditions of footwear that we collect. There is no limit to the amount of money we can raise. The more we collect the more we earn!

After the sneakers are collected, GotSneakers will process and distribute these sneakers around the world, specifically within impoverished nations.

It is estimated that over 300 million pairs of sneakers are thrown away each year in America’s landfills and that over 600 million adults and children worldwide live barefoot. We can touch the lives of thousands by simply cleaning out our closets and collecting our unwanted sneakers.

The request is simple: Clean out yours and your family’s closets of all unwanted paired sneakers. Please bring them tied together in a bag and drop them off in the main entrance area in the GotSneakers box.

We look forward to everyone’s cooperation and we will report the results after the fundraiser at the end of the year. Let’s make a difference together.
