Falcon Flash
October 20, 2022
Dear Falcon Friends and Families,
This past Wednesday the Forest HIlls school community celebrated Unity Day. This is the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month, also celebrated in October. Multiple anti-bullying campaigns, of which Unity Day is one of them, are organized during this period. The key message of this month, and this day, is to unite for kindness, courage, and inclusion, to prevent students from being bullied. At Forest Hills we do our best to recognize students when they are kind and inclusive with others, and ask that our families also celebrate random acts of kindness at home. I’m a firm believer in the saying “you get more of what you pay attention to”, so we are making greater efforts to pay attention to acts of kindness while also addressing unkind and bullying behaviors.
Recess has been smoked out several times this week for obvious reasons. As a district we take a close look at the air quality index every morning and make decisions about outside activities. Unfortunately, several recesses had to be shortened or switched to an inside recess this week. Even our traditional Kindergarten field trip to the pumpkin patch needed to be postponed. With the shift in weather and rain on the way, we expect to restore recesses to their full length next week - RAIN or SHINE. Please make sure students are equipped with rain gear for outside play. Only severe smoke, pouring rain, or below freezing temperatures keep us inside. After all, we’re Oregonians!
Have a wonderful weekend and take care,
Jim Mangan, Principal

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month
What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a learning disability in reading. People with dyslexia have trouble reading at a good pace and without mistakes. They may also have a hard time with reading comprehension, spelling, and writing. But these challenges aren’t a problem with intelligence.
Children and adults with dyslexia struggle to read fluently, spell words correctly, and memorize rote facts such as multiplication tables, among other challenges. But these difficulties have no connection to their overall intelligence. While people with dyslexia can be slow readers, they often, paradoxically, are very fast and creative thinkers with strong reasoning abilities.
Dyslexia can’t be “cured” – it is lifelong. But with appropriate instruction, an individual with dyslexia can learn to read, write, and spell and can become a highly successful individual.

Each week in October, we will feature a message about dyslexia in this newsletter. If you have questions or concerns regarding your child’s learning, please contact the school principal and/or literacy specialist. Another great parent resource would be to contact your school’s Student Services Parent Advisory Committee (SSPAC) representative. Please see here to learn how to contact your school representative.

New Application for School Volunteers
For the safety of children, volunteers are required to have an approved background check when volunteering in schools.
To help streamline compliance with state and school board policies, which require that all volunteers have background checks and knowledge of other board policies -- as well as state-mandated proof of vaccination (or a qualified exemption) -- we are introducing a new all-in-one volunteer application and approval process through ou Raptor Visitor Management System.
Submitting an online application initiates the background check process. Once submitted, applicants will receive an email upon approval of your background check and you will be given access through the onsite Raptor System at all schools. Please allow up to three weeks to process your approval.
Volunteers need to submit only one application for volunteering in all LOSD schools. Applications need to be submitted annually to capture changes in background checks, policies, and/or vaccination requirements.
Volunteer Application for LOSD
Thank you for applying promptly, and for your service to our students and schools. We are grateful for our volunteers.
Bus Passes & Car Line Passes
If your child is riding a bus with a friend, or taking a different bus for a playdate etc, please have your child bring a note or call the office and request a bus pass. Additionally, if your child is going home with a friend in carline please bring a note or call the office and we'll send an end of day note so the carline supervisors are aware.
Bus drivers will not let children on a bus without a pass. Car line supervisors will not allow children in friend's cars for playdates without a note.
Thank you!
