Embracing the Harvest Season
Celebrating Fall
Each group measured, weighed and counted the number of ridges on their pumpkin in Mrs. Jami Reed’s fourth-grade class. Students then estimated which of the class’s six pumpkins would have the most pumpkin seeds. Based on their calculations, many students chose the first pumpkin because of its size. But that was before Mrs. Reed read the story, “How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin” book, which talked about the color of a pumpkin and the number of ribs or indented ridges a pumpkin has that determines the number of seeds. A middle-sized pumpkin won with 956 seeds.
“Students love hands-on learning activities where they can apply their knowledge and get a little messy at the same time! Collaboration and counting by multiples of ten allowed students to get the job done efficiently,” Mrs. Reed said. For more pictures of the activity, please visit the school's Facebook page.
Food Committee Critiques Lunches
Students and parents met with the school’s lunch provider, Quest, to share suggestions and ideas about improving the meals. Students and parents shared what they liked and disliked about the new online meal ordering system. Quest will send a survey to gather additional feedback from families about how they can improve their service. For photos of the activity, please visit the school's Facebook page.
