James Naismith Birthday Party

It has been an exciting year for basketball with the Toronto Raptor’s NBA win and the announcement that Dr. James Naismith will be named to the Canada Walk of Fame. Mayor Christa Lowry would like another reason to celebrate together as a community, so she will be throwing a birthday party for Dr. James Naismith and we are all invited!

The event will take place on Wednesday, November 6th at 1:00pm on Mill Street in downtown Almonte and is open to everyone. Mayor Lowry has invited our staff and students to come celebrate Dr. James Naismith’s birthday! Part of Mill Street will be closed and their goal is to fill Centennial Square around the Naismith Statue and take a big community selfie.

There will be music and Baker Bob will be making special basketball cookies for all the students. Unfortunately, the cookies will not be nut-free but they will try their best to have appropriate alternatives so everyone can enjoy a treat. Students are encouraged to make or bring a party hat and to wear a basketball jersey, Naismith clothing or their school colours.

Snowsuit Campaign

This year celebrates the 34th anniversary of the Lanark County and Town of Smiths Falls Snowsuit Campaign and we are pleased to assist Family and Children’s Services of Lanark, Leeds and Grenville (FCSLLG) with this community initiative. The goal of the campaign is to ensure that all children and youth in our community have a warm winter coat or snowsuit. Last year over 500 snowsuits and or winter jackets were distributed.

Please donate your gently used clean winter jackets and snowsuits in the drop off box located at the school by Wednesday, November 6th, 2019. Winter boots are also accepted. Financial donations are also greatly appreciated. Our collective efforts can make a significant difference.

Our Grade 1-4 students have been invited to attend a musical performance called Flutes Alors at the Almonte Old Town Hall on Tuesday, November 12th. The Grade 1&2 students will attend in the morning and our Grade 3&4 students will attend just after lunch.

Montreal-based ensemble Flûte Alors! is composed of four new-generation recorder players. Through their masterful technique and extraordinary musicality, Flûte Alors! presents the recorder as an eloquent instrument capable of expressing the most extreme emotions and the subtlest of nuances. Progress Reports

First term progress reports will be sent home with students on Monday, November 25th.

Parent-Teacher Interviews

Parent-teacher interviews will take place on Tuesday, November 26th from 4:00-6:30pm. Since interviews are only 10 minutes long, many teachers will not have enough time slots to meet with every parent. If you prefer that your child's teacher call you for a phone interview instead, please indicate this in your child's agenda. Parents will be sent a link by email on Tuesday, November 12th to sign up for interviews using SignUp Genius.

Spaghetti Dinner and Cake Walk

One of the wonderful traditions we have at Holy Name of Mary is that our Catholic School Council puts on a huge Spaghetti Dinner for our parents and students on Parent-Teacher interview night. This makes it easier for parents to attend after a long day at work, and it is also a great way to get together as a community. The spaghetti dinner will take place on Tuesday, November 26th from 4:00pm to 6:00pm.

New this year, we are adding a Cake Walk to the event! Students will be able to buy tickets to enter into a draw for a cake of their choice and names will be drawn before the end of the school day on November 26th. Students can have their parents pick up the winning cakes that night during parent-teacher interviews.

From the Health Unit

Does screen time turn into scream time in your household? Looking for tips to help your child learn good screen time habits?

  1. Limit screen use. Start by having times in the day that are “screen free” such as before bedtime or during supper. Keep screen use to certain rooms of the house, such as the living room or family room.
  2. Encourage other activities, like getting outside or meeting up with friends.
  3. Be a good role model. What does your screen use tell your children?
