Be Bold. Be Courageous. Be the Change! Be a Roadrunner!
A NOTE FROM MS. GONZALEZ
Welcome back and Happy New Year, Roadrunner Families!
I hope you had a wonderful winter break! We are ready and excited to welcome every Roadrunner back to school tomorrow, Wednesday, and hope your children feel the same! January 4th marks the beginning of the 2nd semester, and it is a busy one filled with new challenges. We need all students to show grit, focus on their goals, and give it 100%.
The beginning of the second semester means your child will soon prepare for middle-of-year assessments and for some, TELPAS. It's important to remember that tests, for the most part, are meant to guide instruction. In this newsletter, you have access to resources that will help you and your child understand some basic steps you can take to ensure a positive learning and testing experience. It all begins with consistent routines.
Edgemere parents have high expectations for their children's learning. I assure you, every adult at Edgemere holds students to high academic and social standards all the while showing empathy and compassion for individual needs.
Thank you for sharing your children with us. I can't wait to see how much they grow by the end of the year. Stay connected with the school and the teachers. Let's work together for our students' success during this 2023 semester!
Kindly,
Ms. Gonzรกlez ๐๐

Atentamente,
Ms. Gonzรกlez ๐๐

Book of the Month
Ask your child about the Book of the Month - Separate is Never Equal Separados no somos iguales, by Duncan Tonatiuh
The book of the month connection to Social Emotional Learning includes Relationship Skills and Responsible Decision Making. It is shared in all classrooms throughout the month providing everyone in school with a shared literacy experience. Students respond to the book and responses are posted along our main hallway. The book of the month helps build a community of readers and writers.

IMPORTANT ~ Continued Tardy and Absence Concern
Edgemere's attendance rate continues to decline from 94.9% in October to 93.9% in November and now to 93.6%. Both tardies and absences are major concerns. Tardies and absences can negatively impact the learning of your child. Tardies are also disruptive to other students when students trickle into the classroom throughout the morning.
Our teachers are working diligently to improve math and literacy skills in all of our students and beginning our daily lessons on time in the morning is very important. If a child is tardy every day by 15 minutes, it amounts to 1 hour and 15 minutes of lost instruction per week. When we add up these minutes over the course of a school year, we are looking at a significant amount of instructional time lost.
Absences are a big deal. The loss of instructional time resulting from chronic absences can result in huge learning gaps and causes negative emotions such as worry and confusion in children. We understand that children will get sick, have doctor appointments, and will have to miss school at various times during the year. The main concern is chronic absences that continue to occur throughout the year. Please do your best to make sure the students are in school and on time as much as possible. Let's make attendance a priority.
Attendance
Thank you for helping us increase our attendance rate!
Current attendance rate is 93.9%. Our goal is 97% or higher.
- We thank you in advance for bringing our healthy students to school every day and on time. School start time is 7:30 and dismissal is at 2:45.
- Tardies are documented for any student arriving after 7:45. Outside gates and doors will close promptly at 7:45 a.m. Students arriving after 7:45 will need to enter the building through the main front door. Excessive tardies may result in a referral plus affect participation in behavior celebrations
Edgemere has a weekly and monthly attendance challenge to recognize good attendance and a final Never Been Absent (NBA) celebration at the end of every month.
Please call our attendance office to report any absences.
