Spring Kick-off 2018!
Happy New Year! Thanks to everyone who attended our Spring ’18 Kick-off. We had over 50 faculty and staff participate in the workshop. It was an opportunity to share the successes of the fall semester and to share and learn from one another. Our break-out sessions were filled with strategies on how to be student-centric in what we do. Coordinators shared ideas how to implement or improve upon a student-centric orientation, proctors and fiscal assistants discussed ways to prepare for student testing and reduce out of range scores, and teachers practiced repetition and movement strategies designed to increase student engagement and learning.
Repetition and movement are proven methods of improving student retention. The cone of learning (click image bellow) is an excellent visual to help remind us what types of activities should be planned as part of a lesson. You will Notice that active learning, which involves discussion and doing, are by far more effective than passive based learning. We look forward to seeing these strategies in action as we visit classrooms over the next several weeks.

New Years Resolution: Try a few repetition and movement strategies to increase student achievement.
"Movement: Anything the brain learns while the body is in motion is long remembered." "Cooperative Learning: We remember 90% of what we teach to someone else."
"Games: When playing a game, the stress level goes down and the retention rate goes up." (Marcia Tate)
For your first week, start with a few games/ice breakers to start the process of building a community and getting to know your students. (ice breakers found on shared drive)
