MAKING INFERENCES: Best practices in Instruction and Strategy

  • Textual evidence + Prior Knowledge = Inference

  • Watch the 'Powtoon' video on Making Inferences (see below).

  • THINK ALOUD: In a Think Aloud, the teacher verbalizes how effective readers process a text and infer while they read, e.g., by monitoring comprehension and using strategies to construct meaning. It models metacognitive practices and makes the invisible visible!

  • Know and share with your students the question types on the OSSLT:
  • D.I.M.S.V.O.G. (D = Direct question, I = Indirect question, M = Making connections questions, S = Syntax related question, V = Vocabulary question, O = Organizational structure question, G = Graphic text question)

SERIES OF PARAGRAPHS: Best Practices in Instruction and Strategy

Series of Paragraphs

  • Students must respond to a Opinion question. They must choose ONE side...they either Agree or Disagree. Yes or No. (There's no room for middle ground!)

  • These Organizers need to be modeled and practiced again and again in order to provide students with a mental schema to help them plan their writing.

MULTIPLE CHOICE & GRAPHIC TEXT

Let's consider...

  • Multiple Choice questions make up approximately 50% of the OSSLT.

  • Students either respond to a 'reading' selection, a 'graphic' selection, or are responding to 'use of conventions in writing' style questions.

  • Know and share with your students the question types on the OSSLT:
  • D.I.M.S.V.O.G. (D = Direct question, I = Indirect question, M = Making connections questions, S = Syntax related question, V = Vocabulary question, O = Organizational structure question, G = Graphic text question)

  • With Graphic Text, have students practice with page protectors and washable overhead projector markers to help 'train their eyes' to see everything on the page and make connections and construct meaning. (We did this in our session)

  • A great, fun, interactive (and even anonymous way) to practice Multiple Choice responses is PLICKERS.

Thanks for looking like you were having fun!... ;-)

NEWS REPORT: Best practices in Instruction and Strategy

  • Model the News Report through a THINK ALOUD...see St. Michael's video below for a great example!
  • Use a GRAPHIC ORGANIZER like the Inverted Triangle to organize the most important facts to the least important facts. Link to Holt Online Interactive and printable graphic organizers. https://my.hrw.com/nsmedia/intgos/html/igo.htm
