CORE VIRTUES OF THE MONTH: GENTLENESS and HUMILITY

  • The core virtue that we will focus on this month is HUMILITY. Humility is knowing that we are definitely not perfect, and avoiding the temptation to exaggerate our own abilities and underestimate the abilities of others.

Ours is a culture that prizes ambition, self-esteem, and self-assertion. There is nothing wrong with ambition--the inner drive to succeed and embrace one's talents, but when concern for self-advancement or discovery of talents warps into self-aggrandizement (an exaggerated sense of one's importance and abilities) humility is often the casualty.

In the English-speaking world, it is a challenge to find stories that speak to the importance of saying "forgive me," "after you," or " I was wrong." These are self-effacing virtues that turn the spotlight on the needs of the other. That is not always a popular stance in today's world. Hoever, they do not convey weakness. When we inspire our students to help build up others through this virtue of humility, we cultivate people of deep inner strength, laying the foundation for better communities.

A note from our School Social Worker, Mrs. Sterling

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month

What is Child Abuse and Neglect?

At the Federal level, the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) defines child abuse and neglect as: Any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker, which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse, or exploitation, or an act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm.

There are different types of abuse:

Physical Abuse: is usually defined as “any non accidental physical injury to the child” and can include striking, kicking, burning, or biting the child, or any action that results in physical impairment of the child. Abuse of a child also includes acts or circumstances that threaten the child with harm or create a substantial risk of harm to the child’s health or welfare.

Neglect: is defined as the failure of a parent or other person with responsibility for the child to provide needed food, clothing, shelter, medical care, or supervision to the degree that the child's health, safety, and well-being are threatened with harm.

Emotional Abuse: is injury to the psychological capacity or emotional stability of the child as evidenced by an observable or substantial change in behavior, emotional response, or cognition, and injury as evidenced by anxiety, depression, withdrawal, or aggressive behavior.

Parental Substance Abuse: is parental exposure of a child to harm due to the parent(s) use of an illegal drug or other substance. Allowing a child to be present where the chemicals or equipment for the manufacture of controlled substances are used or stored. Use of a controlled substance by a caregiver that impairs the caregivers ability to adequately care for the child.

Abandonment: it is considered abandonment of the child when the parent’s identity or whereabouts are unknown, the child has been left by the parent in circumstances in which the child suffers serious harm, or the parent has failed to maintain contact with the child or to provide reasonable support for a specified period of time.

Sexual Abuse/Exploitation: Sexual Abuse can be referred to as molestation, is usually an undesired sexual behavior by one person upon another person is considered child abuse. Sexual Abuse also includes human trafficking, sex trafficking, or trafficking of children for sexual purposes. Sexual exploitation is defined when a child is allowed to engage in prostitution or production of child pornography.

Ways to Help Prevent Child Abuse

1) Be a nurturing parent or caregiver. Children need to know that they are special, loved, and capable of following their dreams.

2) Help a friend, neighbor, relative. Being a parent isn’t easy. Offer a helping hand take care of the children, so the parent(s) can rest, or spend time together.

3) Help Yourself. When the big and little problems of your everyday life pile up to the point you feel overwhelmed and out of control-take a time out, don’t take it out on your kids.

4) If Your Baby Cries… It can be frustrating to hear your baby cry. Learn what to do if your baby won’t stop crying. Never shake a baby-shaking a child may result in severe injury or death.

5) Monitor your child’s television, video, internet viewings/usage. Excessively watching violent films, TV programs, and videos can harm a young child.

6) Volunteer at a local child abuse prevention program. For information about volunteer opportunities, call 1-800-CHILDREN 7) REPORT SUSPECTED ABUSE OR NEGLECT If you have reason to believe a child has been or may be harmed, call your local department of children and family services, or your local police department.

A note from Ms. Porter, R.N.

Hydration is so incredibly important for your children, please remember to send a water bottle with your student(s) to school please.

As we all know COVID has had a decline and is less of a topic these days, but if your student is sick or ill with symptoms, please keep them home, this includes colds, flu etc...We are still trying to keep our community healthy and happy!
