ASSESSMENT NEWS for PARENTS by Sheila Perkins, STC
Beginning January 9th through February 15th, ESOL students in kindergarten through grade twelve in the state of Maryland will participate in ACCESS for English Language Learners, an English Language Proficiency Test. ACCESS for ELLs is the assessment the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) has selected to measure English Language Proficiency as part of the requirement of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of January 2002.
The ACCESS for ELLs Assessment consists of four subtests: listening, reading, speaking and writing. Students will be scheduled to take different subtests on different days, spread over this testing window. Students must complete all four tests to earn an Overall Proficiency score. Test results for the school will be returned in May 2017.
WE NEED YOUR HELP TO MAKE SURE YOUR STUDENT DOES HIS OR HER BEST JOB. PLEASE…MAKE SURE…
Your child arrives at school on time.
- Your child eats a substantial breakfast in the morning that will give him/her the necessary energy and alertness for participation in the testing.
- Your child gets a good night’s sleep the night before each testing day.
- Your child is in school every testing day. Children absent on a testing day will participate in make-up testing.
- Please encourage your child to do his/her best!
Thank you for your help. We know our students will do their best!

PARCC Corner
In Language Arts, students must read, analyze, and explain the meaning of what they read. PARCC measures writing at every grade, and helps students build vocabulary
In Math, PARCC asks students to “reason” in mathematical terms—to use math concepts to solve real-world problems, and show how they got the answer (marylandpublicschools.org).
Rigorous Readers by Telethea Bozeman, Reading Specialist
I am happy to report that our persistent focus on academic vocabulary here at Overlook is supported by research. Please read some of the facts regarding the importance of students building their vocabularies. Research shows the academic advantages of students with strong vocabularies verses their counterparts with weaker vocabularies.
- Having a healthy arsenal of words (vocabulary) increases our learning potential.
- Vocabulary instruction can make marked improvement in student reading— 90 minutes a week can make a big difference
- Limited background knowledge—specifically word knowledge—is the main contributor to students being stuck at a certain reading level, unable to move forward.
