Antietam
Though September 17,1862 was a key victory for the union, it was also the deadliest single day of fighting in the Civil War. When Robert E. Lee, Commander of the confederate army, reached Maryland, he split his army into four parts, planning to confuse the Union. Before he got to put his plan in action commander of the union, George B. McClellan, was already informed of the plans. Both sides met in Antietam near Sharpsburg, Maryland. 21,000 soldiers died within' 8 hours. This resulted in the Emancipation proclamation.
Battle of Vicksburg
July 4th, the important river city of Vicksburg, Mississppi fell under control of Union troops led by Ulysses S. Grant, instrumental in the victory at Vicksburg. Grant prevented food and supplies from reaching the confederacy, led by General Robert E. Lee. Union gunships on the river supported Grants 77,000 troops by firing thousands of shells into the city. This lasted 47 days. There were over 19,000 casualties in all.the Anaconda plan emphasized the blockade of the Southern ports, and called for an advance down the Mississippi River to cut the South in two. After the battle, the Confederacy lost port Hudson in Louisiana, meaning they lost stronghold on the Mississippi River. Because of this the Civil War has now turned.

Battle of Gettysburg
Gettysburg was not a capital, a key port, or the location of a fort. It basically was an accidental battle though....it was the deadliest battle of war. The confederacy entered looking for supplies. The battle started at 7:30 am July 1, Lee ordered an attack designed to "create a panic and virtually destroy the Union, led by General George G. Meade. At first it seemed that the plan might work. In the end half of those who started the attack ended up wounded or dead. That battle ended confederacy hope of gaining help from Britain and France. There were over 47,000 casualties. This resulted in the Gettysburg address-a speech by U.S. President Abraham Lincoln- one of the best known in American history because of its dedication to the soldiers killed at Gettysburg.
