Taking Care at BF: How to Interrupt (Appropriately, that is!)
Part of our Spirit Day helped to showcase the importance of interrupting appropriately. Students should first decide if it is important or necessary to interrupt. Then, they should either raise their hand or politely interject by saying excuse me. If someone asks them to stop interrupting- that probably means they need to stop and think about whether what they need to say is really important.
Classroom Lessons
Third grade classes took part in lessons that focused on how our actions affect others and the importance of giving other people a chance instead of quickly making a judgement about them. We also discussed the importance of having a trusted grown-up at home and at school that can be counted on when we need to share our feelings. Each student was able to say at least one person they could seek out when needing help.
The story Enemy Pie by Derek Munson was used as the basis for our lesson and discussion. Students had fun dishing up silly ideas of what they might put in an "enemy pie!" After the story they better understood that worms and dirt wouldn't work to transform an enemy into a friend, but the real recipe involves getting to know that person to see if you might be able to get along.
More lessons are coming soon to the other grade levels...Stay tuned!
