Causes and Complications

  • The Sickle Cell disease is inherited
  • It can block blood vessels which stops the oxygen from getting through
  • can harm organs, muscles, and bones

How to test of it

  • A sample of blood is taken and examined
  • Usually tested before infant is leaves the hospital

How to treat it

  • hydroxyurea (drug)
  • hematopoietic stem cell transplant
  • Daily antibiotics from 2 months old to 5 years old


  • You cant prevent it
  • See a genetic counselor before having children

Life Outlook

  • Most people who have Sickle Cell Disease live to the age of 40
