AP Human Geography
Summer 2023
Teacher: Camille Benson
This fall begins my 22nd year in education and 19th year teaching courses strictly under the history umbrella. I have taught in Anchorage, Alaska, at the Tennessee School for the Deaf, and now here at Maryville Junior High School. My early years were spent in west TN, however, I quickly realized this is the better end of the state. Both of my degrees are from The University of Tennessee where I met my husband. We have two wonderful children and moved to Maryville for them to attend MCS. Long before I worked here, I knew Maryville had the best education!
Over the years, I have been blessed to have won numerous accolades:
· Emory Road Daughters of the American Revolution Teacher of the Year
· Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) History Teacher of the Year for the state of Tennessee
· Teacher leader for three years at the National Education and Advocacy Summit where students meet with their Congressional members in Washington, DC to discuss individuals needs regarding federal laws
· Presented at a national conference about her ten-year involvement with a research grant focused on student writing
· East Tennessee Historical Society Teaching Excellence Award
· Belz-Lipman East Tennessee Holocaust Teacher of the Year
· Former graduate-level adjunct professor at UT
It is an honor for you to entrust your child’s education to me and one that I do not take lightly. My students will hear that “sole job is to support you and see you succeed”. And, in an AP classroom, my job also includes supporting parents! This is new territory for your family and I’m excited you’ve chosen to take the adventure.
