Dozier Library News
November Family Edition
Our library books need your help!!
We've only been back in school for 11 weeks, and our library has already had 12 books returned with liquid damage. 6 of these books I was able to dry and save; they were able to go back on the shelves for our students to read. Unfortunately, the other 6 books were too damaged to be saved. The one common factor in these accidents was that they got wet because of a leaking water bottle or lunch box, rain, or eating/drinking around the book.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!
Remember these things to help keep our library books safe and away from liquids.
1. Keep water bottles and lunch boxes out of backpacks when a library book is being carried to and from school.
2. Keep water bottles in an outside pocket of the backpack.
3. Take an extra precaution and have your students keep their library books in a zip lock baggie. (Since October's issue of the Dozier Library News, I've seen 4 more students using zip lock baggies to protect their library books.)
Scholastic Book Fair
Book Fair: November 11-15, 2019
Helpful hints for Parents:
1. Consider using eWallet during Book Fair. Any money not spent will be returned to your account at the end of the week. Information will be sent home soon.
2. Send a note with how much your child may spend.
3. Send a note about which books you would like your child to purchase.
4.CHANGE in a baggie? Please count it at home and send a note with how much your child is bringing in the bag.
5. You are welcome to come to Book Fair in the morning, before school, with your child.
6. Be sure to stop by the Book Fair Monday or Friday during Dozier's Thanksgiving lunches.
6. Book Fair closes at 2:00 PM Friday afternoon.

Battle of the Books
During this school year, your 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader will have the opportunity to participate in a competition called “Battle of the Books”. (BoB for short) This competition will be held in May, at our school.
The way the competition works, is that each student will read all 10 books that have been selected. These books were chosen from the 2019-2020 Bluebonnet Nominee List. Your student may begin reading these 10 books at any time, and all these titles can be found in the DES Library.
In May, we will have a tournament style BoB competition. Each team will consist of 4 students. Teams earn points during each round by answering detailed questions about the books from the list. The teams will “battle” each other until only 2 teams remain. These 2 teams will then face off in the “final battle”.
Below are the BoB book titles selected for the 2019-2020 school year.
Wish Tree by Katherine Applegate
Saving Winslow by Sharon Creech
Watchdog by Will McIntosh
The Cardboard Kingdom by Chad Sell
Captain Superlative by J.S. Puller
The Miscalculation of Lightning Girl by Stacy McAnulty
Two Dogs in a Trenchcoat by Julie Falatko
Magic Misfits by Neil Patrick Harris & Alex Azam
Mr. Gedrick and Me by Patrick Carman
Me, Frida and the Secret of the Peacock Ring by Angela Cervantes
You can not only find these titles in the DES library, but also in the Saginaw Public Library (or any other public library), on Amazon, and possibly at Half-Price Books or other local book stores.

Online Card Catalog
When I think of a card catalog I think of note cards about books that are kept in a piece of furniture with many small drawers. I would guess that most, if not all, libraries have gotten rid of these and are now using online card catalogs.
Third through fifth grade classes have been through information literacy lessons about using the online card catalog; second grade will be guided through these lessons soon. Using the card catalog allows our students to determine what books they need/want. I teach our Ducks to locate the address, or call number, of the book they are interested in. I then teach them how to physically locate the book in the library by using the book's address/call number. Our Ducks know that the first part of the call number tells which neighborhood the book lives in, and that the second half tells where to find a specific book in that neighborhood. I relate it to their home address and explain that their house doesn't move and is in one place; the same is true in the library!! Each book has it's own address and will always be in that one spot.
Reading Blackout Helpful Hints
"We missed the ___________ colored card. Can my child still go to the Purple People Party?"
I understand that "life" happens, and that some months are harder than others. If your child misses 1 card, I will give him an opportunity to "make it up" after the final card is due. However, if your child misses 2 or more cards, she will still earn the prizes for the cards she completes, but will not earn an invitation to the Purple People Party.
"My child has not received his prizes. Did you receive my child's card?"
I had 176 red cards turned in October 3rd. All cards were then checked for completion, put in grade level order, then ABC order by teacher, and finally ABC order by student. I then enter all the information in a spreadsheet. This organization makes the Reading Blackout paperwork a bit more manageable, especially when we get to cards 5 and 6.
Unfortunately, this does take a few days. Remember, I do see every student at Dozier each week for library literacy lessons and book check-out. Prizes are usually passed out a week or two after each card's due date.
Thank you for being patient. I promise your kiddos will get their prizes.
PS It would be great if I could get a volunteer to help with some of these tasks. If you're interested, please contact me at hbeaver@ems-isd.net.
"A biography book"
A biography is a book about a person's life. This book is written by a different person. Biography books in the Dozier Library can be found in the B (Biography) Neighborhood. In other libraries, biographies might be found in the non-fiction neighborhood under 92. Biographies are put in ABC order by the person's last name the book is about. For example, in our library, a book about Emmitt Smith is found in B SMI. Another library might have this book in non-fiction under 92 SMI.
Library Trivia: A collective biography is a book that contains more than one biography. These books can be found in the 920s in the Dozier Library. The 920s are located right after the Biographies. If you ever have trouble locating a book in a library, ask for help. We'd be happy to assist you!!
