Proviso Classes Cancelled Mar. 18th
Proviso 209 Classes Cancelled Friday, March 18—After 10 Hours of Negotiations, No Teacher Contract Settlement; Negotiations to Continue
Greetings Proviso Parents and Students,
Today, Proviso District 209 and the Proviso Teachers Union (PTU), which represents District 209’s approximately 280 educators, met with the federal mediator for nearly 10 hours, but did not reach an agreement. As a result, schools will be closed again tomorrow, Friday, March 18. Next week, March 21-25, is the District’s Spring Break, and students and teachers were not scheduled to be in attendance.
We share the concerns of many of our families that students will have lost valuable instructional time due to two weeks of the teachers strike. Informal negotiations continue and we are working to schedule additional formal negotiation sessions with the goal of reaching agreement, so that students and teachers can return to the classroom after Spring Break as planned on Monday, March 28.
Currently, the District remains firm in its offer of 9% salary increases (3% each year) over a three-year contract. This offer is within the financial means of the District as we strive to advance the best interests of all District 209 stakeholders, including our students, parents, and community. Given our experience with these negotiations, the District believes strongly that a longer contract term will provide much-needed stability for our students and families. The union, however, is now demanding a two-year contract with 7.25% raises (4.25% in the first year and 3% in the second year).
For up-to-date information on the status of negotiations, please visit the Proviso District 209 website.
Sincerely yours,
Rodney Alexander
President, Board of Education
Proviso Township High Schools District 209

Atentamente,
Rodney Alexander
