Helix College Testing Graduation Requirement
Helix requires students to take one of these tests:
PSAT
ACT or SAT
If your child has not taken any of the above tests, they can satisfy this graduation requirement by taking the FREE ASVAB test at Helix on Friday, Oct. 11 at 7:30am - 10:30am in room 1300.
Even if they have met the Helix College Testing Requirement, the ASVAB is an excellent resource to identify their career strengths which can be used to identify college majors or careers that meet their vocational aptitude strengths. Dress Code Policy
DRESS CODE POLICY:
At Helix Charter High School, students are expected to dress in an appropriate and dignified manner to maintain a safe and positive educational environment. School IDs are to be worn at all times as part of the school dress code. IDs serve as an essential part in keeping our campus safe. In an effort to improve school safety and the atmosphere for learning at Helix Charter High School, students will dress in a manner that reflects positively on themselves, their parents / guardians and their school. Just as adults must conform to workplace standards, students are to follow the guidelines.

1. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
The FAFSA allows students interested in attending eligible Colleges, Universities and Career Education Programs to apply for federal and state financial aid.
Federal student aid:
- Grants—financial aid that doesn't have to be repaid (unless, for example, you withdraw from school and owe a refund)
- Work-study—a work program through which you earn money to help you pay for school
- Loans—borrowed money for college or career school; you must repay your loans, with interest

Taking the SAT is a key step on the road to college and career—and now, there's a chance for students to be rewarded for their efforts with the College Board Opportunity Scholarships. This program guides students through the college planning process and offers a chance to earn money for college.
The program is open to all class of 2020 students in the United States, Puerto Rico, and other U.S. territories. Class of 2021 students will be eligible beginning in late 2019. Your students can complete key steps along their path to college for a chance to earn scholarships, including:

- Concurrent Enrollment Courses All students taking a college class that is not on the Helix campus this semester MUST submit a screenshot of their class schedule for Fall 2019 if they want to earn High School credit. Schedules should be submitted by October 20th to Ms. Morgan at morgan@helixcharter.net
- FREE SAT/ACT Prep Class Helix offers a Test Prep course to all Helix students (all grades welcome) every Wednesday from 6:00 - 7:30 in Room 1300. Practice tests & Skill building practice is provided. There will NOT be class on: 10/9, 11/27, & 12/18
40 hours of community service are REQUIRED for graduation.
1. The Language Academy’s Annual Fall Carnival - Saturday, October 12th
The Language Academy is in need of volunteers to help with set up, clean up and running carnival booths from 10 am to 5 pm or anytime in between on Saturday October 12th.

2. Rolando Elementary School’s Fall Festival - Friday, October 25th
Rolando Elementary School is seeking volunteers for their annual Fall Festival. Volunteers are needed at the event anywhere from 3 to 8 pm for set up, break down, and running event activities. Meals will be provided for all volunteers.

Oak Park Elementary and Music Conservatory is a music themed, culturally and ethnically diverse school located in central San Diego. Throughout the year there are several events that require a number of volunteers to make them successful.

4. Lemon Avenue Elementary 2019 Fall Carnival - Saturday. October 25th
2019 Fall Carnival planning is well under way and we have a number of spots that will need to be filled. From helping to build the Haunted House, setting up game booths and working the booths the night of the carnival. Please sign up wherever you can best fit in to help with this year's Carnival. The carnival is Lemon Ave PTA's largest community event and biggest fundraiser of the year. We appreciate the time you take to help make this a fun and successful event for students and the school!

5. La Mesa Arts Academy’s Fall Carnival - Saturday, October 26th
Volunteers are needed to perform various functions at LMAAC's Fall carnival on Saturday, October 26th throughout the day from 10 am to 10 pm. The carnival runs from 6 to 9 pm, but available shifts also include set-up and clean up.

LOCKOUT POLICY:
1st lockout- 30 minutes after school detention assigned by Attendance Technician
2nd lockout- 1hr after school BMA assigned
3rd lockout- 2hr after school BMA assigned
4th lockout- 2hr after school BMA assigned
5th lockout- 2hr BMA assigned
6th lockout- student will be sent/walked to GLPs office, ISS assigned by GLP
7th lockout- 1 day school suspension..
TARDIES:
Tardiness occurs when a student is not in his/her assigned classroom when the bell rings for a class to begin. Students who arrive late disturb the learning environment for others and hinder their own opportunities in the class. Students who are late to class will receive a disciplinary consequence. Excessive lateness will result in further disciplinary action.
TRUANCY:
Truancy occurs when a student is absent from any portion of a class or classes without a valid excuse. Truancy also occurs after repeated tardiness to a given class. Students who arrive at school missing one or more class periods will be considered truant.
Tardies and Truancies must be cleared within 24 hours.

ASVAB Exam
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a multiple choice test, administered by the United States Military Entrance Processing Command, used to determine qualification for enlistment in the United States Armed Forces. It is not an IQ test, but the ASVAB does help the military branches assess which jobs you are best suited to perform.
Students must register for the exam with Mr. Theroux or Mrs. Olivari.
