Weekly RAM Newsletter

From the desk of Principal Mills - Sunday, November 6th, 2022

Happy Sunday Ram Families!

I hope this newsletter finds you all well and enjoying our first chilly weather weekend of November! I also hope you enjoyed the additional hour of time you had this morning as our clocks rolled back last night... please make sure to set your clocks back an hour if you haven't done so already!

A big THANK YOU to all of our parents who supported our PTSA Book Fair this past week! It was awesome to see all of the parent volunteers in the library this week helping make our Book Fair possible - thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedules to donate your time! Students enjoyed coming in and shopping for new books, posters and other fun chatkis that were available for purchase. We also had quite a few used books collected in our book drive - thanks to all of our Ram families that donated books to help the cause! All of the proceeds raised from the Book Fair will be used by the PTSA to support future events for students on campus.

The ASB Spirit Wear deadline for ordering your TPMS Spirit Wear is this Wednesday, November 9th! Please check the "Need TPMS Spirit Wear?" section below for the link - this is the last opportunity to order your TPMS spirit wear this year and before the holidays, so consider your Christmas gift list needs and place your order before this Wednesday!

Last week I sent out a link for a parent survey that we are asking all TPMS families to complete. We value parent input greatly and appreciate your participation in the short survey that is part of our school and district's continuous improvement process. The survey answers should be specific to our school site. If you have students at more than one school, you will need to do a separate survey for that school using that school’s link.

The parent survey is aligned with the state mandated California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) given to students in grades 5, 7, 9 and 11, and the individual site Staff Survey also to be conducted this month. We will be using these student, staff, and parent surveys to gain a better understanding of our parents’ view of our schools and how we can best support our students. All of the survey results will be used as part of our state required Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). Please CLICK HERE to be taken directly to the TPMS survey. The deadline to submit your survey is this Thursday, November 10th.

As a reminder, there will be NO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 11th in recognition of Veteran's Day. We are looking forward to celebrating our military veterans and active duty military families this Thursday, 11/10 at our Military Appreciation luncheon in Pride Park during lunchtime. Military families should have received an invitation this past week to attend - if you did not, please reach out to my Administrative Assistant, Christie Hamilton at chamilton@powayusd.com.

Finally this week, I hope you can join me and other PUSD parents on Wednesday, November 9th at Bernardo Heights Middle School for What I Wish My Parents Knew. This special parent event will provide you an opportunity to hear from PUSD administrators, community leaders, and our own students on issues impacting ALL students - How to Set Guardrails for your Student, Social Media and Its Impact, Middle School Relationships and Handling Academic Pressure. Plan on meeting in the BHMS gym starting at 6:30pm for the general session, followed by two breakout sessions of your choice. No sign-up or RSVP is necessary to attend, so bring a neighbor or friend with you! See the flyer below for more information.

Free & Reduced Lunch Applications!

Although school meals are now free to all students under California’s new Universal Meals Program, the application for free and reduced-price meals is still very important. School funding depends in part on the number of students that qualify for free or reduced-price meals. With all students now eating for free, fewer families are completing the application and schools are at risk of losing funds. Household income information is confidential and applying online is quick and easy. Plus, students that qualify for free or reduced-price meals may also qualify for discounts on transportation, SAT and AP tests, home internet, and college application fees. You can apply online at MySchoolApps.com, or pick up a paper application in the school office.

TPMS Basketball is Coming!

Hey Ram B-Ballers! Come try out for the TPMS Basketball Team on Wednesday, November 9th and Wednesday, November 16th after school in the MPR. Future practices will be Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the MPR after school. Interested?! Sign up forms are in the front office on the counter.

TPMS Canned Food Drive is Back!

The TPMS Canned Food Drive is back and better than ever! The California Junior Scholastic Federation Canned Food Drive benefits local San Diego food banks. It starts this Tuesday, November 1st through Thursday, November 10th. Collected items should be dropped off to your student's RAM classes. As a reminder - we cannot accept any glass jars. We are only collecting boxed and canned goods! Thanks in advance for supporting this cause Rams!

NPFH Lesson in November

The counselors - Mrs. Baskin, Mrs. Jennings and Mrs. Roman, and Mrs. Bernsen, our Student Services Specialist, will present the first of three No Place for Hate school-wide activities to Ram classes in November. The topic is Disability Awareness, and it focuses on:

  • valuing people for what they can do, not what they can't do .
  • understanding and identifying the differences between visible and invisible disabilities.
  • discussing the importance of using "People First" language and practicing how to use it.

We encourage families to view the presentation and to continue the conversation at home. Please contact your student's counselor if you have any questions or concerns.

TPMS College & Career Fair

The TPMS Counseling Department will be hosting the TPMS College and Career Fair on Wednesday, November 16th during lunch. We would love to have our very own TPMS parents involved - if you work for a local company or business who would like to participate, or have a career pathway that would be interesting to share with middle schoolers, please complete the TPMS College and Career Fair Interest Form LINKED HERE. We plan on having the event during both lunches, so participants would need to be available from 12:30-2pm. Please email one of our counselors if you have any questions about this event.

Preliminary 2022 CAASPP Results Now Available

This was the first statewide test given to California students since 2019. Following the pandemic, the 2022 test was significantly revised by the California Department of Education (CDE), providing a new baseline for school districts and sites to measure progress moving forward. Due to the significant changes in the test, districts and sites are unable to make direct comparisons with previous years’ results. However, consistent strong results are indicative of system-wide collaboration by parents, teachers, and school staff to facilitate student success. We are proud of our students and know their accomplishments are reflected in a variety of ways. CAASPP results are one measure of progress and should be reviewed alongside other learning information as well.

CAASPP test scores are recorded as Standards Exceeded, Standards Met, Standards Nearly Met, and Standards Not Met.

  • In English language arts, 68.36% of our Twin Peaks MS students met or exceeded standards on the 2022 CAASPP.
  • In mathematics, 48.99% of our Twin Peaks MS students met or exceeded standards on the 2022 CAASPP.

CAASPP was administered to students in grades 3-8 and grade 11 during the Spring of 2022. If your child took the CAASPP, you can access their individual results through ParentVUE. Directions for using ParentVUE are linked HERE. Please keep in mind that these scores are only one measure of an individual student’s learning. Data from these assessments is used as part of a broader picture of student achievement. Teachers use these results in conjunction with site and classroom assessments and observations to help tailor instruction throughout the school year.

Parent Night on Substance Use

Abraxas High School is hosting a parent night on substance use with guest speaker Howard Barker of New Life House Sober Living on Thursday, November 17th starting at 5:30 pm in their library/media room. Any parent or guardian with a student in the Poway Unified School District interested in learning more about this topic is welcome to attend! Flu Season is Here

Cold and flu season is upon us. Health officials are warning there may be high levels of influenza compared to the past two years, when COVID-19 precautions helped keep flu infections low. As a reminder, please do not send your child to school if they are feeling sick or experiencing symptoms of a virus. Keeping your sick child home will be a great benefit for the health and wellness of our students and staff.

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. Some people, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at high risk of serious flu complications. Symptoms of influenza can vary, but generally include a high fever, headache, chills, body aches, sore throat, and cough. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers these tips to prevent influenza:

● Get vaccinated every year

● Avoid close contact with sick people

● Frequently wash hands with soap

● Stay at home if you are experiencing flu-like symptoms

● Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth

● Individuals with chronic health issues and/or individuals experiencing severe symptoms should be evaluated by a medical professional.

● See more prevention tips from the CDC by clicking here.
