From the Principal:
We hope you enjoyed your 3 day weekend as we reflected and remembered Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
"Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction."
—Martin Luther King, Jr., "Loving Your Enemies," in Strength to Love.
The ultimate test of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and moments of convenience, but where he stands in moments of challenge and moments of controversy.
—The Struggle for Racial Justice, Address delivered at Nobel Peace Prize Recognition Dinner, 27 January 1965
Wishing you a great week,
Shelli LeBlanc

Important Administrator Update
Many of our wonderful Collins students are picked up after school across the street at the YMCA parking lot. The YMCA has been gracious in working with and accommodating us. However, we have had concerning reports of parents parking in the fire/no parking zones, as well as several incidents of students being onsite for several hours waiting for their rides.
If you are using the YMCA parking lot, please do not park in the Children's Academy pick up spots, or the fire/no parking zones. Please also ensure that you are picking your child up in a timely manner.
Thank you for your partnership in this matter!

The Importance of Sleep
Have you ever heard the phrase "waking up on the wrong side of the bed?" Ongoing research and evidence show a relationship between sleep and mental health. While mental health conditions can make it challenging to sleep well, poor sleep, in general, can also contribute to overall mental health challenges, such as irritability, anxiousness, and difficulty concentrating and making decisions.
Looking at and evaluating our sleep habits and hygiene can help us create optimal sleep conditions. Here are some tips for getting a good night's sleep:
- Avoid caffeine close to bedtime: Caffeine can cause difficulty falling asleep.
- Avoid alcohol close to bedtime: Alcohol can disrupt sleep and cause breathing problems.
- Take time to unwind: Finding a relaxing bedtime routine can help optimize your sleep.
- Get in exercise: Exercise can boost energy, but it has also been shown to help you with deeper sleep.
- Follow a routine: Keeping the same sleep and wake schedule (even on the weekends) can help with sleep quality.
- Avoid naps: Naps are not necessarily a problem, but if you find that they interfere with your sleep at night, it may help to cut out or minimize naps.
- Avoid going to bed too hungry or full: Eating balanced and healthy meals throughout the day can help with a good night's sleep.
- Get up if you do not fall asleep within 30 minutes: If you are unable to fall asleep within 30 minutes, leave your bedroom and do something relaxing (avoiding screen time). Once you feel drowsy, try again to fall asleep.
- Make your sleep environment comfortable: Make sure you have a comfortable temperature and limit the light in the room.
- Jot down those thoughts: If you have thoughts or ideas that come up while you are getting ready for sleep, jot them down to revisit them the next day.
And how much sleep do we need?
Newborns (0-3 months): 14-17 hours
Infants (4-12 months): 12-16 hours (including naps)
Toddlers (1-2 years): 11-14 hours (including naps)
Preschool (3-5 years): 10-13 hours (including naps)
School Aged (6-12 years): 9-12 hours
Teens (13-18 years): 8-10 hours
Adults: 7 or more hours (~7-9 hours)
Remember that quality sleep also affects how our students perform at school. Children and adolescents who do not get enough sleep have a higher risk for many health problems (obesity, type 2 diabetes, poor mental health), and lack of sleep may contribute to poor academic performance at school (difficulty with attention and behavior).
Nurse Kendall's Updates
Now that spring is on the horizon, our kids are involved in all types of sports and activities. Safety is an important issue to keep in mind. The following link addresses different safety measures for children in the intermediate school age group:
Safety for Your Child: 10 Years - HealthyChildren.org
Please remember to NOT send cough drops to school with your child. Cough drops and other medications need to be checked into the clinic for your child to safely have them at school.
Technology Update
It’s hard to keep up with all the ways that students can connect online with friends! Here’s some information about Discord, an app that allows users to chat and record videos to share with others.
