Your Guide to the Happenings in Second Grade Room 18
Classroom News
We have been working very hard learning our classroom routines. We have begun practicing our daily choices for reading group time. We are building our stamina for read to self as well as begun our word work which helps us to practice our spelling words. We have been completing our spelling homework by making our choices about what we will do for homework. We have started to add strategies to our CAFE board. This board is where we post various reading strategies that we learn. We use these strategies to help us become better readers. So far we've learned to Check for Understanding, Back Up and Reread, and to Retell a story in sequence of events to help us in our comprehension. When your child is reading at home, ask them to practice these strategies to assist them with their understanding.
Our Hero Day was a huge success! We had guest visitors from the Vineland Fire Department, EMTs, and the New Jersey State Police. We listened as they told us about their responsibilities, and asked questions. We also were able to see a fire truck, stand in the truck's bucket, look at three different police cars and even speak on the car's radio. We were able to sample wild wings from Buffalo Wild Wings and see the State Police helicopter land on our playground! Everyone was able to go in the helicopter too! It was a fun-filled, informative day!
Spelling Grid Homework
Children will receive a new spelling list on Monday. They will then make four (4) choices for the week of what they would like to complete for homework. On Monday, they will write their choices for the week in their Spelling Journal along with the date. The directions for each choice is glued to the back of their journal. Children will be tested on their words on Friday.
Wednesday Folders
Students will usually bring home a Wednesday folder. In it, you will find any notices of upcoming events, programs, and news. Also, in there will be any tests that we took on paper. Please empty the folder, reviewing the papers, sign the outside of the folder verifying that you saw its contents and return to school the following day.
Field Trip
We have our first field trip on Monday, September 26th! We are going to Duffield's Farm. Please make sure you have returned a signed permission slip along with $5.
