A Look at our Week
I will be harnessing your child's excitement for the season this week in our Writing Workshop, as we draw and write about the costumes we will be wearing for the class party. Your children have been working hard at drawing details in their illustrations during our writing time, and this week they will start to add labels, words, and even sentences to their writing.
This week in Fundations, we will be learning the letter-keyword-sounds a-apple/a/ and g-game-/g/. Ask your child which letters they know are vowels. We have learned a,i,o and u so far. The consonants that we have learned are t,b,f,n,m,c and g. We are also learning about syllables in words and rhyming. Have fun at home by asking them for words that rhyme with pen/mat/log/hat etc.
In Math we have been doing a lot of counting over the past few weeks. This week we will begin a new unit on measuring, and comparing numbers. Key words that we will be using are: longer/shorter. Taller/shorter. More/fewer. We have been playing card games recently in Math Workshop; learning how to work with a partner, how to take turns, and how to play by the rules. I encourage you to play card games at home with your child. It's a great way to work on social skills, in addition to math skills.
Last week, we had a visit from Asheville Fire Dept. We got to climb into the backseat of their truck, see and touch "the jaws of life" apparatus, watch a firefighter suit up, and practice dropping low to the ground and crawling across our classroom floor to the door. Follow-Up: Your child should be asking you where your safe meeting place is in event of fire. If they get the answer from you, they earn a FD bracelet.
