Message from the Mill
January 2019
Principal's Message
Dear Parents,
The staff and administrators of Puckett’s Mill Elementary School are especially thankful for the children and families who make Puckett’s Mill such a special place to learn and grow. What a wonderful time to be a Sparrow Hawk! Amidst the high levels of teaching and learning that fill our days, we celebrate the joyous children and their delightful ways!
We THANK YOU for supporting our school this time of year with classroom holiday parties, our Chorus Holiday Performance, the staff brunch, and the many other celebrations and events during the season! It is heartwarming to see your involvement here at Puckett’s Mill. It is an honor to serve at this school alongside great teachers, staff, students, and families.
May your holiday sparkle with moments of love, laughter and goodwill…and may the year ahead be full of contentment and joy.
Have a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year
Ruth Westbrooks
Principal, Puckett’s Mill Elementary

The Huskies are Coming!
In January, Mrs. Ittner's 5th grade math students will be sponsoring a fundraiser to support Iditarod musher, Charley Bejna, and his amazing team of sled dogs. Charley is a type 1 diabetic who uses racing in the Iditarod as a platform for raising awareness about type 1 diabetes, emphasizing the importance of self-care as a means to living a full and healthy life.
Last year Charley surprised Puckett's Mill students by visiting our school with one of his canine athletes, Hawk. (photo below) He spent an entire day visiting classrooms, sharing about his race experiences, and participating in other school activities. Based on the success of last year's fundraiser, this year's "lead dog team" of students chose to sell plush huskies again. Here is a sneak peek at the huskies we will have for sale. Be on the lookout for more specific information when we return from winter break.
For more information about Charley, or to see other ways in which you might show your support for him, check out his website using the link below. He has some cool merchandise for sale on the 'store' page, and the 5th grade lead dogs, aka "the Idita-kids" are serving as guest bloggers on his site this year.

Digital Citizenship Lessons for 3rd - 5th
One of the activities was to create a group or class slogan or motto to promote good citizenship. We wanted to share some of them with you.
- Be smart, do your part!
- Technology is on your side.
- Don't overdo the text, 'cause you don't know what can happen next.
- If you can think it, you can do it!
- Do the right thing when no one is looking.
- Make other people happy.
- Nothing is impossible.
- Be kind, stay kind, be amazing!
- Standing up to them is better than going down.
- If you see a site you don't know, don't click it.
We also learned the acronym STOP to help students any time they feel threatened, unsure, or angry with someone online.
S = step away from the computer
T = tell an adult
O = only OK sites (pre-approved by teachers or parents)
P = pause and think
