Nurse Notes with Nurse Julia
October 18th – Vision Research Corporation eye screening for 4th graders - VRC will provide vision screening for all 4th graders. Forms will be sent home with your student before the event. You will be able to opt out of the screening when you return the form.
November 8th – Health Hero Flu vaccine clinic - The flu vaccine will be offered to students with private insurance or Medicaid and qualifying uninsured students. There are no out of pocket expenses or deductibles and participation is voluntary. Forms will be sent home at a future date. There will be no flu mist/nasal spray vaccine.
November 30th – UAB Scoliosis Screening for 5th graders - All 5th grade students will be screened for Scoliosis (curvature of the spine) as required by law. The purpose of the screening is to recognize any deviation from normal so the need for treatment can be determined. The procedure is simple. The screener will observe your child’s posture while standing and bending forward. Students should wear a loose fitting shirt that day that can be pulled up easily so their back can be seen. A fitted shirt or camisole can be worn under clothing. The screening will be done in a private location and boys and girls will be screened separately. If scoliosis is suspected, you will be notified to receive further evaluation from your private physician. If you do not wish for your child to be screened at school, please send a note indicating that your child will be screened by his/her primary physician.
Fitness Fun with Coach Smith
During the month of October, we are focusing on the Punt, Pass and Kick Unit and Physical Fitness testing.
Remember - For safety reasons, students are required to wear tennis shoes during PE time.
Counseling Connection with Mrs. Walsh
Dear Parents,
During the month of October, Guidance lessons focus on safety and healthy choices. Third and fifth grade classes will receive two lessons pertaining to Erin Law’s Prevention Education. Fourth grade will receive one lesson reviewing the information they received last year pertaining to Erin’s Law. Classes will also focus on bullying strategies and refusal skills to negative peer pressure. Please ask your children to share what they learn with you. As parents, it is vital that you openly express your safety expectations with your children. I am also stressing that you as parents make sure your children know their full address and a contact number of at least one parent; this is also a big component of safety.
Our Red Ribbon Week will be celebrated the week of October 30th – November 3rd. This will line up with Richland’s Healthy Living Week. Be on the lookout for our “dress up” schedule.
Please note that Auburn City Schools will host a discussion on Mental Wellness & Prevention of Substance Abuse led by Danny Molloy of the Addiction Prevention Coalition. This event will take place at Auburn High School Cafeteria (1701 E. Samford Avenue) on October 2, 2017 from 6 to 7 p.m.
*Remember to go to an adult you can trust (parent, teacher, counselor, principal, etc) if you have fears.
*Sometimes just talking about your fears can make things better!
*Sometimes an adult or friend is able to get help for you.
*Many things you fear may never happen. Just talking it over with someone you trust
may help you view a more realistic picture.
Leader Lessons
Our "Leader in Me" Focus for October is habits 3 and 4:
Habit 3: Put First Things First
Key Phrase: I will do my homework, then play!
What this habit looks like in action: I do my work before I play. I know what my responsibilities are, and I do them based on what is most important. I practice self-control.
Habit 4: Think Win-Win
Key Phrase: I believe we can all win!
What this habit looks like in action: I want everyone to be a success. I don’t have to put others down to get what I want.
When there is a conflict, I look for solutions that will make everyone feel good.
