Abbie Goldberg will provide an overview of what we know about adopted children’s educational experiences and mental health, with attention to the variability that exists among adopted children. She will discuss too how adoption “shows up” at school in children across the life cycle, from preschool to elementary/middle school to high school. Dr. Goldberg will discuss the unique challenges that parents face in determining whether and how much to share about their children’s adoption with schools, with attention to how parents can prepare their children to advocate for themselves, and also when intervening may be especially important. This talk will address institutional and interpersonal forms of marginalization within schools, including how these may be amplified for LGBTQ-parent families, and how such marginalization affects parents and children. Dr. Goldberg will also address best practices for schools and what teachers and other support professionals can do to enhance inclusion for all families in the school setting. Resources will also be shared, and there will be time for discussion and questions.
