What's Coming Next Quarter?

KU Engineering Expo

When the Voyagers return from their holiday break, we will begin to prepare for our trip to KU for the Engineering Expo on February 20th. The students will create entries, individually or in small groups, for one of 18 different competitions. Several competitions are new this year including:

  • Creating a bow for an archery contest (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics)
  • LEED design contest ( U.S. Green Building Council)
  • Water Finding contest (Engineers Without Borders)
  • Weight Lifting (Physics and Engineering Students Organization)

Other returning competitions include:

  • Rube Goldberg Machine (American Society of Mechanical Engineers)
  • Pasta Bridge (American Society of Civil Engineers)
  • Skyscraper (Architectural Engineering Institute)
  • Gravity Car (Jayhawk Motorsports)

Because some competitions require building or use of tools, students may need to work on parts of their entries at home.

After looking over all the rules it seems that the engineering students have increased the level of difficulty this year in many contests. Some include a writing or presentation component. Be sure to talk with your child about the contests they are considering. You can find the descriptions at http://groups.ku.edu/~kuesc/expo/activities/competitions.

It has been a great first semester. I wish you all very Happy Holidays!
