Supporting young learners
Ask questions
Encourage your child to talk about what they do at school and ask them what things they like to do best. In order to get more conversations ask them detailed questions, such as, where do you sit during circle time, who do you eat lunch with, did you go outside or stay in for recess? For students who struggle with communication maybe use pictures or read the teacher's note for the day and talk about what they did. Maybe they are able to shake their heads yes or no or point to a picture for you.
Student learning
Have your child share with you what she is learning in school and then do related activities at home, For examples, if they are learning the color red and fire safely practice things at home that can help reinforce those concepts. They could point out things that are red at the grocery store or at home. If your drive by a or pass a firetruck, talk to your child about what they are seeing and what a firetruck does.
Routines
In our young students, routines are very important. Create a morning and evening routine. A routine helps settle fears and is good with helping students predict what is coming up next in their day.
Morning: Create a goodbye ritual that your child can count on. For instance, you may sing a favorite song on the way to the car or the bus, or create a special good bye routine.
Evenings: As part of dinner clean up or evening time rituals you can help your child lay their backpack out or pack lunch for the next day.
FALL FESTIVAL
Our fall festival this year will take place on October 22nd during the school day. This day is set aside to celebrate fall and serves as our fall party day. In an effort to make this activity as safe and healthy as possible we will not be allowing any parents/caregivers to join us. We will have a petting zoo here all day, straw forts, bubble fun, bubbles, pumpkin rolling and each student will get to take home a small pumpkin. We always love our fall festival and we are looking forward to having some fun with our students.
