MHS School Counseling Office
3/25/2020 Update
Tackling the Unknown
So, this is an interesting season of life, huh? With so many unknowns and new considerations, our counseling team wants to ensure that our students know that we love you and are here to help you process joyful and difficult emotions. Like always, our counselors are available to help students with personal/social, academic, or college and career related questions. Instead of in person meetings, we may have to set up video conferences. Our counseling team is excited about serving our students! We miss you!

When Should I Call or Email?
Our counseling team is diligently working on behalf of our students - not just during our posted virtual office hours. Students and parents can always contact our staff through our Office 365 accounts (first name.last name@maryville-schools.org), but we recognize that some questions need to be addressed via a phone call:
When should I call?
- Social and emotional support
- More intricate questions that need discussion
- Difficult situations that require counsel
- Concerns about academic issues/graduation progression
- When in doubt, feel free to call during our virtual office hours!
When should I email?
- Password/login help
- Transcript requests
- Application/scholarship questions
- College exploration
We are here and available to support and to help families. Please do not hesitate to contact us!
What Can I Do to Promote Wellness?
Self-care refers to practices incorporated into each day to help us feel refreshed, energized, and focused. By valuing self-care, we can better navigate our daily challenges and stressful situations. From academic concerns to personal relationships and future plans, we all face circumstances that can feel overwhelming if we have neglected caring for ourselves. As we transition into a virtual schooling model, it is imperative that you infuse some self-care strategies into your daily routine.
Counselor Check-in
Students -- Complete this optional check-in, and a counselor will respond to you! You can access the counselor check-in multiple times.
What if I am really overwhelmed?
Social distancing does NOT mean social isolation. You are not alone with your fear and anxiety! If practicing self-care on a routine and regular basis does not help you see hope, you may need to reach out to someone else with some specialized training. Here are two resources that are available if you are experiencing thoughts of suicide or self-harm:
- Mobile Crisis Unit contact: (865) 539-2409
- National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK

We are gathering additional resources for students on our Canvas page. Access the information on our home Guidance News page - Resources for Building Closure.
See you soon!
We love and miss our students! Please reach out to one of the counselors, if we can serve you as you adjust to virtual schooling. Keep us posted on how we can help!
