From the Principal
The entire Benninghoven staff and I would like to take a moment to thank the families in our community for their participation, patience, and positivity as we have begun this school year. We are filled with appreciation as we see caregivers supporting students during live online sessions, neighbors assisting each other to balance schedules, and community members sharing their helpful feedback with our team. We are humbled by your participation and our children are fortunate to benefit from your partnership. We are doing our best to make this unprecedented time manageable for your family, and impactful for our learners.
This week we continue with remote learning for all students in the Shawnee Mission School District. In two weeks we begin Hybrid Learning for PreK-2nd grade families. Please be sure to review the reopening timeline below to stay current on important transition dates. Our building team is already preparing for when students come back for on site learning in the coming weeks. We need your help to be prepared and keep everyone safe. Below you will find a link to the On Site Learning Planning Survey. We need this information for every student who will be learning on site to help us finalize our building plans. I know that you have completed many surveys and forms at the district level, but this is the first one we need completed at the building level. Please complete the On Site Learning Planning Survey by Wednesday, September 23rd at 9:00PM. We will use the data to determine what lunch, arrival, dismissal, and other parts of the day will look like in our building. This survey does not need to be completed for students who have selected "remote only" learning for the semester. These numbers will have a direct impact on Benninghoven students and families, so please make sure your choices are documented.
There are a few action items we want to make sure you are aware of throughout this newsletter:
- All PreK and K families must complete the ASQ screener for the state of KS. See details below.
- All families must complete the Remote Learning Parent Assurance form in Skyward. You received an email about this last week and there is additional info below.
- All families that selected in-person learning must complete the On Site Learning Planning Survey mentioned above. See link below.
We thank you for taking the time to support your child and our school as you complete these items. We hope that the school year is off to a positive start for your family, and if we can assist you in any way, please reach out.
Thank you and take care,
Dr. Gonser

District Health Update- Keep Our Community Safe
We are asking members of the Shawnee Mission School District community (students and staff) to avoid participating in large gatherings, particularly where mask and social-distancing guidelines are not being followed. Have you participated in a large gathering, either indoors or outdoors under either of these circumstances?:
· Masks were not worn OR
· Social distancing was not observed
If so, we ask that you please quarantine for 14 days after the date of departure from the large gathering. We are seeing cases rise in our community and want to do all we can to keep our students and staff safe and healthy so that we can continue making progress toward reopening. Thank you for doing your part.
Attendance
Food Services
The food service department is pleased to announce that we will be offering FREE meals to all SMSD students regardless if they are learning remote, hybrid or in person. This includes breakfast and lunch meals.
Meals are funded entirely by USDA as part of their Summer Meals Program extension. These free meals will continue as long as federal funding is available and could end prior to 12/31/20.
We encourage families to continue to apply for free and reduced meals in case this funding is no longer available by clicking here. Qualifying may allow for other support through the district so it is important to continue to apply for free and reduced meals.
Meal Pick Up Info:
- Meals will be available for pick up at all 47 SMSD schools.
- Pick up is on Fridays from 7:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.
- No advance ordering is needed. (The online digital ordering system has been disabled.)
- Available only for students enrolled in SMSD.
- May pick up meals for all of your students at your most convenient location.
- At pick up, the student(s) SMSD ID number(s) will need to be presented. Please have this ready in advance. (Student ID may be found in Skyward.)

During remote learning each week’s pick up will include 7 breakfast and 7 lunches for each student.

Each breakfast meal includes these components: fruit, grain, and milk
Each lunch meal includes these components: protein, fruit/vegetable, grain, and milk
When the district is able to move to the hybrid model, the students will receive their in-person meals at no cost during the two days they are in school. Meals may be picked up on Friday for the other 5 days of the week. Any extra a la carte purchases the students make while on site learning will require money to be on their food service account.
Meals are prepared by District Food Services staff and distributed following food safety and sanitary practices.
Please contact the Food Service office with questions at (913)993-9710 or foodservices@smsd.org.
