April News from JHE

April 2015

Spring is finally in the air!

As we begin to wind down the school year please be sure to communicate with your child's teacher any questions you may have regarding his/her academic success. We work hard to ensure all children reach their maximum potential realizing, in the words of Dr. Seuss, children want the same things we want. To laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained, and delighted.

March "Mathness" = SUCCESS

Thank you to the 250 families who came to school to celebrate March Mathness. The 16 stations were filled with engaging games and activities to demonstrate how mathematics can be fun and interactive. Please see the link below for some great pictures posted in the Gazette. The Elementary Building Team would like to thank the chefs for delivering a great meal and congratulate the junior chefs for their expert preparation. The food was delicious. Each junior chef was chosen to participate based on an essay contest sharing why they wanted to be the next top chef. Well done!

Please click the yellow box below to find more fun-filled math games to keep the excitement going.

As we begin to experience warmer weather, children's after-school activities usually increase. If you have changes in your child's dismissal procedures, please send a note in with your child. This allows us to make the necessary changes on the rosters and ensure your child's safety. If you experience an emergency and need to call school with a change of plans, please call before noon. Phone calls after 12:00 pm, make it very difficult for changes to be made in a timely manner to ensure your child's safety. When calling school please do not leave a message if it pertains to dismissal changes. Messages are sometimes unable to be retrieved until after dismissal. Please speak with the receptionist who can contact the correct people and make the necessary changes to the rosters. We experience over 30 dismissal changes per day and we want to be sure all children arrive at the correct destination.

Summer School

Pending a positive budget vote we will once again offer summer school to invited students. We will send home invitations to selected students after break. Summer school will be held from July 6-July 30. Transportation is provided. The hours will be 8:30-11:30. Summer school will focus on reading language arts and will be taught by certified teachers from JHE. We look forward to another successful summer school experience.

Hola Enrichment

Beginning in May we will offer Spanish to students in grades 2-4 from 2:30-3:30. Our own wonderful Spanish teachers will lead these classes, getting to know your children while teaching the basic language and key terms. Transportation home is provided. The class will be held two times per week. Please look for the invitations coming soon.

Math Facts in a Flash

The competition is heating up! We have many students who have not only mastered the levels expected for their grade but those of the next grade! Keep up the great effort. Students mastering the most levels from each grade will be rewarded with a celebration at the end of the year and entered into a drawing for an iPod! Automaticity is the goal. Please click the link below for additional information on Math Facts in a Flash.

Academic Pep Rally

JHE's third annual Academic Pep Rally was a huge success! Student's watched our own JHE's

Ninja Turtles boost everyone's enthusiasm with an award winning show about ACES, narrated by Channel 6 News Reporter (Mrs. Finton). This acronym is used throughout JHE to help all students write top notch responses.

A=Answer statement

C=Cite your evidence

E=Explain your answer

S=Sum it up

Our own JHE's Turtles (Mrs. Gribben, Ms. O'Reilly, Mrs. Adams, Mrs. Page) battled the negative thoughts of Shredder (a.k.a Coach K) versus the positive statements from ACE (a.k.a. Coach Canell) to write a very informative piece on making your own pizza. In addition, medals were provided to all students who achieved High Honor Roll last year. High Honor Roll is acheived by earning Honor Roll for all four quarters! We are proud of all of their hard work and determination. Throughout the Pep Rally K-6 students boosted everyone's excitement by chanting "knock, knock, you're about to get shell shocked," led by Mr. Gregg. April O'Neill (Ms. Grolley) provided an up-to-date report through-out the play as she observed JHE's Turtles working hard in Mr. Cuomo's (Mr. Radosti) class! Special thanks to Mrs. Britten for organizing the Pep Rally and Mrs. O'Reilly for writing the entire script, Mrs. Frisbie for technology support, Mrs. Barr for behind the scenes coordination and Mrs. Dolan for special effects. Dedication from the staff, who make these programs possible, is what makes JHE so special!
