Superintendent's Report

Welcome to Kate Diskin, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction

This evening we would like to welcome Kate Diskin to her first Board meeting as our new Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction. She comes to us from having been in that role in Middlesex School district. She is not totally new to Millburn, as she once taught here in the early 90’s. She has already conducted a workshop and been to all of the schools. We welcome her as the new leader of the Curriculum and Instruction Office and an important addition to the district leadership Team and the Millburn School Community.

District Back to School Update

The district’s Back-to-School Update process has started. This is our electronic method for submitting all of the annual forms and contact information via the PowerSchool Parent Portal. The updated information will be for each student including emergency contacts, medical information, approval of annual agreements, etc. It takes about 5 -10 minutes to complete the process. The login portal is open now and you will have until August 19th to complete the update. It is important to note that in the event of an emergency, these are the contacts and numbers that we use to reach parents/guardians.

Administrator training

Tonight, the Board will be approving our work this fall with Robyn Ginese of SanKofa- Leadership Consulting, a company who will help address the administrative retreat and the book study of Crucial Conversations.

Business Agenda Items

Donations

Two generous donations to the school district were accepted by the Board. Many thanks to:

---The Hartshorn PTO for a donation in the amount of $5,299.99, to be used for the purchase of a new Yamaha studio upright piano.

---An anonymous donation of $5,000 to be used towards renovations in the guidance area at Millburn Middle School.

Capital and Maintenance Projects

---The Board approved resolutions authorizing applications to be made to the DOE for approval of educational plans, schematic plans for school facilities projects. As presented at last month’s Board meeting, and defined in the Board goals, the district has been looking at the way capital projects are funded, and is recommending that, as old bonds are paid off, new bonds be sold to fund needed projects, so that we have a relatively flat level of tax levy needed for the capital debt portion of our budget.

The next opportunity to sell bonds under this funding model would be during 2020. With this in mind, the district has been working with its architects to identify projects to be submitted to the DOE for review. Last month the Board approved the submission of security vestibule projects. At the July 22 meeting, the Board approved the submittal of building improvement projects at each of our schools including an addition at the Middle School to expand the cafeteria space so classes can spend lunch period in one place. The projects also include turf replacement for Miller Field and the adjoining softball field as well as replacement of the tennis courts.

In order to take advantage of the summer months in 2020, we would need to get approval for these projects in January 2020, and so have included in the resolution an indication of a special election date of January 28, 2020. The specifics related to the election, such as the final project list and the bond proposal will take place over the next few months.

Policies

---The Board approved a revision to Bylaw 0164, Conduct of Board Meeting to adjust the timing of the first public comment session. Thus update moves the first public comment to earlier in the board meeting agenda. The new order of the agenda will be reflected on the August meeting agenda.
