RICH Problem solving

What does this look like?

Rich problem solving can be defined as...

Using the strategies and tools to support the understanding and progress of tasks associated with critical thinking and reasoning. Allowing students to have a voice, provide opportunity for learning through many vehicles with multiple entry points.
The mathematical processes that support effective learning in mathematics are as follows: • problem solving

• reasoning and proving

• reflecting

• selecting tools and computational strategies

• connecting

• representing

• communicating

It would appear as if Picture #2 provided a RICH problem

  • There was evidence that the student was engaged.
  • It also appeared that mathematical thinking, reasoning, meaning-making,connection-making and developing concepts was being made.
  • developing authentic tasks founded on key concepts in mathematics
