A Message To Families From Mr. Peck
Riverview Families,
Your child's attendance at school is extremely important. We completely understand that absences are sometimes necessary due to illness or other unique situations. However, the following statistics from attendanceworks.org, make it clear that whenever possible, students need to be in school.
• Starting in preschool and kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
• Missing 10%, or about 2 days each month over the course of a school year, can make it harder to learn to read.
• Students can still fall behind if they miss just 1 or 2 days every few weeks.
• Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
• Absences and tardiness can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.
Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit now so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Eventually good attendance will be a skill that will help them succeed in high school and college.
So what can parents/guardians do to help?
• Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
• Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
• Keep your child healthy and make sure your child has the required shots.
• Introduce your children to their teachers and classmates before school starts.
• Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor or another parent.
• Try to schedule medical appointments and extended trips when school isn't in session.
• If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors and other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.
• If your child must stay home due to illness or quarantine, ask the teacher for resources and ideas to continue learning at home.

Riverview Students Learn Conflict Resolution Skills by Using "The Peace Path"
Each month, students do a CARES lesson with counselors Jessica Alladin and Nicole Felipe. Part of becoming successful people is being able to recognize the emotions we are feeling, naming them, and finding healthy and productive ways to deal with them. One way our students learn to do this is by utilizing "the peace path" when they find themselves in a conflict with another student. Students practice their conflict resolution skills in a controlled environment so they have the necessary skills to navigate tricky situations independently in the future. Through using their assertive voice and showing empathy towards others, our students learn that we can fix any problem by using our words and listening ears.
No School on Friday, December 1 Due to a Teacher Professional Development Day
Students In Grades 3-5 Able to Share Views Through Learner Survey
Hearing the voices of the young people we serve is important to us. Throughout all Farmington elementary schools, learners in grades 3-5 were able to participate in a survey recently and share their views on a number of things. The results of these surveys will be examined by school staff to ensure that the learner experience at Riverview is made even better than it already is. We will use the weekly family newsletter to share some of the results with families as well.
Please Do Not Bring In Birthday Treats For Classmates
The ISD 192 district wellness policy prohibits bringing treats in for birthday celebrations. There is no need to bring anything in on your child's birthday. Your child's teacher will find other (non-treat related) ways to recognize their special day.
Consider Being a Substitute Teacher or Guest Paraprofessional
End of Day Student Pick Up Must Be Done Directly In Front of the School
When students are waiting to be picked up at the end of the day, it is important that they stay near the supervision we have in front of the school. They should not walk down the sidewalk (toward Dodge Middle School) to find their pick-up vehicle. We do not have adult supervision down that way and we can not monitor which vehicle our learners are getting into. While it may take longer to wait in the line until you get to the front of the school, it is essential that we do it this way to ensure the safety of every student. Thank you for your cooperation with this important request.

Consider Donating Unwrapped Toys For Those in Need This Holiday Season
Riverview Elementary is a drop off location for the “Toys for Town” collection drive. Toys for Town is an annual toy drive organized by the Farmington Police Department to help make the holiday season special for children in our community. The program provides local families a holiday meal kit and gifts for their children. In 2022, there were 400 children from 117 families that benefited from this program. The police department is anticipating similar numbers in 2023.
This year, the Farmington Police Department is setting an ambitious fundraising goal of $40,000, which would match 2022's donations. Along with the fundraising goal, collection bins for unwrapped toy donations have been set out at area businesses and city buildings. (See full list of locations below). They will be available until Monday, Dec. 11. In addition, monetary donations to the Toys for Town program will be accepted at the police department.
If your family needs this program, the department will take request calls through Dec. 11. Call 651-280-6TOY (6869).
Volunteers are needed to wrap and deliver toys on Saturday, Dec. 16. The wrapping event will be held at Farmington High School, 20655 Flagstaff Ave., starting at 9 a.m. Just show up at 9 a.m. ready to wrap!
Toys for Town tree ornaments are available for purchase! Proceeds will benefit the Toys for Town program. Stop by the police department, or the downtown Farmington Liquors location to pick one up.
