From Mr. Backmeyer's Desk

I hope this newsletter finds you and our future Mustang well! My name is Jeff Backmeyer and I am the Southside Elementary School principal. I look forward to being your child(ren)'s principal! The 16-17 school year will be the beginning of my 4th year here. Prior to working here, I was the principal at Mt. Healthy Elementary, the Assistant Principal here at Southside, an Elementary Technology Specialist, and taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. I grew up in Hagerstown, IN and attended Indiana University-Bloomington.

I thought I would take this opportunity to communicate with you a few things in this newsletter:

  • making sure that you have signed up for a screening time and for REMIND
  • some community events
  • some information about our school
  • some JOB OPENINGS at Southside for next school year - SEE BELOW
  • the 16-17 school calendar

Have a great weekend!

Welcome to Southside Kindergarten

Dear Kindergarten Families,

It is our pleasure to welcome you and your child to Southside’s 2016 Kindergarten class.

As part of the process of placing our incoming Kindergarten students in classrooms, the Kindergarten team will be screening all students before school lets out for summer. Students currently attending Southside Pre-Kindergarten will be screened during the school day. Students not currently attending Southside will have the opportunity to sign up for a suitable time via VolunteerSpot (online sign up sheet) details of which will come to you via REMIND (private electronic communication tool). Screening for these students will take place at Southside Elementary.

Screening will take place at two separate times: Wednesday, May 18 from 3-6pm and Saturday, May 21 from 9-3pm. Please sign up using the VolunteerSpot link at

During screening, we will check some pre-Kindergarten skills, such as colors, shapes, letter recognition, number recognition. These will provide a baseline for our growth model report card so we can see where each individual child began their elementary school journey. Please do not stress about this screening - it is simply to establish what your child already knows.

Your child will be screened by all members of the Kindergarten team. Each teacher will be focusing on a particular part of the screening and your child will meet all members of the team briefly.

This will not be a time to meet your child’s teacher as placement in classrooms will be determined after screening is complete. There will, however, be an opportunity for you to provide the team with valuable information about your child and family as we will have some papers for you to complete while we screen your child. Parents will not walk around with their child during screening. You and your child will have an opportunity to meet their teacher at Open House on August 2nd before school begins.

We look forward to meeting your children!
