1st Quarter Done! 3 More To Go!
Thank you all for a great first quarter of school! Listed below are just a few reminders:
- Bellflower Middle/High School does not permit any drop-offs or deliveries of food or other items. Please ensure that your student is prepared for the day when coming to school in the morning with their lunch, supplies, money, etc.
- Wearing a mask. At this time, wearing a mask remains optional. We follow the required regulations based upon the LA County Department of Health.
- Dress Code. Please be sure that your student follows the dress code and wears appropriate clothing and accessories. Bellflower hats are also the only school approved hat that can be worn at school.
- Headphones/Earbuds. Headphones/Earbuds of any sort may not be worn while on campus, unless used as an instructional tool for one of your classes. Such devices cannot be used between periods. It is a matter of safety that students are able to hear directives from adults on campus.
- No returning back to campus. If a student has an early release (7th or 8th period), once the student leaves campus, they may not return to campus.
For a full list of student policies on attendance and dress code, please click here.
Cool Class Spotlight!
In today's newsletter, Bellflower Middle/High School wanted to highlight our Physics class, led by Mr. Michael McConn, one of our science instructors. The class shown in photos below participated in a hands-on activity on September 22, where student tested one of their earlier paper models to see if an egg would survive a fall at a certain height. Students are learning about properties of engineering and physics.
High School Vocal Department
Bellflower High School Vocal Department just had its first concert of ‘22-‘23. It was a sold out success. Newman Theater was packed with supporting parents, friends and alumni. Choir, Angels and Ensemble presented songs of passion from 1500 to modern day songs of love in different languages. Come and watch their Winter Concert on December 14.
BHS Ensemble was honored to attend and sing the national anthem at the City of Bellflower State of the City luncheon at the Mayne Center on October 6th, 2022. The Bellflower Mayor, city officials and many local VIPs were all there. We are proud to share our Buc pride.

The Dangers of Fentanyl
In the last newsletter, a description of the dangers of vape pens was provided to both students and parents. In this week's newsletter, Bellflower Middle/High School wanted to highlight the dangers of fentanyl.
More and more in the news, we are hearing horrifying stories about how teens are getting their hands on fentanyl laced products, and are overdosing as a result. Sadly, this has led to the deaths of many students throughout the United States, including here within Southern California. Recent data shows that over 150 people die every day from overdoses that are related to synthetic opioids, like fentanyl.

California Great Shakeout!
On October 20, 2022, at 10:20 a.m., our entire school district, along with public K-12 schools and districts across the state, will participate in the 2022 California ShakeOut. This year’s ShakeOut has over 7,700,000 participants registered. On October 20, 2022 at 10:20 a.m. the entire district will conduct a full earthquake drill. This includes a “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” drill, followed by a full evacuation.
California continuously suffers from earthquakes, and we want to make sure that our students are prepared. Families should sit down and have conversations with one another regarding earthquake preparedness. Families can visit the Great California Shake Out website for more information regarding the event, and to see how to manage your own earthquake preparedness plan at home. Click here to visit the Great California Shake Out Website. Or, you can click here to learn more about earthquakes and earthquake preparedness from the United States Geological Survey website. The USGS website also tracks all earthquakes around the world.

SENIORS: College Applications & FAFSA
Reminder to all seniors: UC applications opened in August (can only be submitted in November). CSU applications are open in October (due dates vary, with most having due dates in November). Community College applications can be submitted usually starting in December or January. We ask that students use the California Colleges website to submit their UC application, CSU applications, and FAFSA or DACA application. The California Colleges website enables students to automatically have their Aeries information and grades automatically transfer into their application! Mrs. Tripp (the senior counselor) will be going to visit senior classrooms to discuss college applications and FAFSA in more detail.
All seniors should work on their 2023-2024 FAFSA application (US citizens or eligible non-citizens) or California Dream Act application (for undocumented students), both of which open in October, and whose priority deadline is March 2nd. This is how community colleges, trade schools, and four-year universities will know how much financial aid you will be able to receive. Yes, it is possible to submit the FAFSA past the application's priority deadline, but you are not guaranteed the same amount of free money that you could have received (so don't procrastinate!). Even if you are unsure about attending a college/university after high school, you should at least submit the FAFSA, to keep your options open. What if you change your mind?
To work on completing the FAFSA or CADAA application online, it is helpful if you already have the information that is listed on the attached guide:
Should you need assistance completing a university application, or to complete your FAFSA, you can go to the College & Career Center (Room 401) during the times that it is open.
In addition, should have have the time, you can also review Dr. Tehrani's 2022 College Workshops, that were presented to students in March of 2022. Click here to access a Google Folder that contains slides and a 1-hour video recording of the following workshops:
College Workshop #1: Degrees, Resources, & Dormitories
College Workshop #2: Costs, Financial Aid, & Scholarships
College Workshop #3: Internships, Safety, Study Abroad, & Jobs

Filipino American History Month
To learn more about Filipino American History Month, please click here to be redirected to the Filipino American National Historical Society, which provides a description about the event. There is evidence of Filipinos in 1587 arriving in what is now the United States. Did you know that Filipino-Americans make up the 2nd largest Asian-American population in the United States, or that nearly a quarter of a million Filipino-Americans are veterans of World War II? In 2009, U.S. Congress declared October as Filipino American History Month.
LGBTQI+ History Month
The LGBTQI+ community has long suffered to have their voices heard within the mainstream public. LGBT History Month was first recognized in the United States in 1994 for the month of October. There are many online resources that talk about the historical achievements that have been made by members of the LGBTQI+ community. Please click here to access resources from GLSEN, which is an educational organization working to end discrimination and bullying based upon sexual orientation and gender identity within K-12 schools. Or, you can click here to access the History Channel's LGBT History page to learn more about various historical events that affected the LGBT community. Lastly, you can click the link here to visit the PBS website to learn about milestones in the LGBT movement.
