Chapter 5- Relational Resilience
Relational resilience is when you draw strength from an emotional support. For adults the emotional support may be there children. Knowing that your children depend on you gives you the strength to keep going. Likewise, children draw emotional strength from their family. Early we discussed the importance of building a relationship with among family members, now we need to build the emotional strength. Everyone needs to feel important and needed. How can you, as a parent, make your child feel that they add value to your family? Often giving your child a chore or something that is solely responsible for can give them the feeling of importance or being needed. For instance, feeding a pet, reading with a sibling, doing the laundry, or taking out the trash. Any of these chores will make your child feel like they are being a contributing part of the family. Just as you like to feel that your children depend on you, they want to feel like you depend on them. Knowing that you are all in this together will help build your relational resilience.
