ELPAC is Here!
2021-2022 SPSA Measurable Goal
By June 2022, English Learners scoring proficient (Overall Level 4) on ELPAC will increase from 7% to 30% as measured by the Summative ELPAC assessment.
You and our English Learners have been working for this moment all year long. This is the time when they will show how much English they have learned this school year. Last year’s data indicates that reading and writing were areas that our EL’s struggled in. Make sure you give them a few more opportunities to engage in some ELPAC like tasks in reading and writing. Visit Malabar’s Schoology group and find the ELD folder or our Malabar Google Drive. There you will find some ELPAC like tasks you can use this week.
START SMART 2.0
If you haven’t started teaching START SMART 2.0 now is the time to start! Lessons can be found at: https://achieve.lausd.net/Page/8773#spn-content
These lessons will review what are English Learners learned in START SMART 1.0 as well teach them how to paraphrase, read an infographic, build an oral paragraph, and conduct an oral presentation. Let me know if you need support. I am more than happy to help!
Food for Thought
Do your English Learners respond with one-word answers or phrases instead of complete sentences?
What teacher moves can you do to increase English Learner oral output during whole group discussions and group discussions?
If have questions about some of these facilitator strategies, let me know.

STEAM Instructional Coach-Angela Muro
Hello teachers,
I hope you all managed to stay warm last week. Can you believe it’s March already? When I think of March, I think of Spring, Spring Break, Open House and testing. I know that Mr. Carrillo and Mr. Melendez are working with our ELLs to help them succeed on their ELPAC testing. We can all do our part to support this effort during our STEAM instructional block. Remember that one of our STEAM Instructional Expectations is to:
· Engage in scientific inquiry by asking and answering questions to promote science and engineering practices (SEPs).
Many of our SEPs require student discourse, as well as opportunities for informational writing. We do not have to reinvent the wheel. We can use the existing strategies and tools we already have in place, i.e., Constructive Conversation Skills and Norms. There is also a great tool in your Amp Sci TEs called:
“Eliciting and Leveraging Students’ Prior Knowledge, Personal Experiences, and Cultural Backgrounds”
This provides suggestions for how to elicit responses from our students. Examples are provided on how to connect new learning to students’ existing knowledge. These examples are specific to the unit and help to engage students. If you need help locating this tool or need support with anything STEAM, please shoot me an email or come by Room 5. The mercury should be moving up next week…
Updates from our Intervention Teacher-Vanessa Chavez
Hello Teachers,
Thank you everyone that Progress Monitored their Well Below Benchmark (WBB) students last week. Our goal is that all students scoring Well Below Benchmark in DIBELS MOY are to be progress monitored (PM) every two weeks in at least one DIBELS measure between the DIBELS MOY and EOY 2022 window. Unfortunately, we did not meet this goal. Students that scored Below in MOY will need to be progress monitored this week to guide our small group instruction....Let's get 100%!!! Have a great week!
CFA#2-Edulastic is Open for Assessment-Due Friday, March 11
Planning for Interventions
After-School for English Learners: We are currently conducting after-school intervention for our English Learners. We are preparing students for ELPAC coming in April. This intervention is Malabar sponsored.
After-School Intervention in Writing: We are targeting students in grades 3-6 preparing them for SBAC writing. All students will take the IAB Brief Writes assessment so we can select students to participate in this intervention. This intervention will begin at the end of March. Students selected for this intervention will be at the strategic level.
After-School Intervention in Math: We are targeting students in grades 3-6 preparing them for SBAC math. All students will take the IAB Fractions assessment so we can select students to participate in this intervention. This intervention will begin at the end of April. Students selected for this intervention will be at the strategic level.
Springboard (District Sponsored): This intervention will target students K-3 in the area of Literacy. The intervention begins in March and ends in May. Vanessa is leading the charge with this intervention. We will be selecting intensive students to participate in this intervention.
Book Nook (District Sponsored): Book Nook is a virtual intervention for 75 Malabar students. The focus is on literacy. Students will be meeting virtually with their tutor 4 times a week. All grades are eligible to participate. Focus will be on strategic students. Ms. Alma Marquez is organizing this intervention for students.
We know that any support that we can give our students in greatly appreciated. The classroom teacher and intervention teachers have to work together to ensure that our students are getting the targeted instruction they need to succeed. Remember that these are all of our students and we are all responsible for their learning. Coordinating interventions will be a major task especially with so many interventions planned for the Spring.

Focus on Classroom Observations-Standard 3: Delivery of Instruction
As we visit classrooms, we will be focusing on the following two elements:
3b2. Discussion Techniques and Student Participation Techniques are used to ensure that all students share their thinking around challenging questions
Effective Practice: Teacher uses intentional, differentiated strategies to engage all students in discussion, attempting gradual release from teacher-directed to student initiated conversation. Students participate in intellectually challenging discussions.
3c1. Standards-Based Projects, Activities and Assignments Standards-aligned learning activities cognitively engage students in the lesson
Effective Practice: Instructional projects, activities and assignments are aligned to the instructional standards, require higher levels of thinking, are culturally relevant, and may include real-world application. Most students are cognitively engaged, constructing their own understanding and exploring content. The learning activities are differentiated, as necessary, to meet the learning needs of student subgroups.
Math Observation Updates
Glows:
- Students are coming and going throughout the instructional day. They are being pulled for music, special education services, or intervention. I applaud your efforts in adjusting your instruction to juggle everything that is happening in the classroom. We have to give students what they need!
- Anchor charts continue to be visible in the classrooms. They are posted around the classroom as a reference tool for students.
- Use of Math Journals-I continue to observe the use of math journals. Math journals help to record math concepts, strategies, models and vocabulary. Students also have the opportunity to conduct QW (Quick Write) in their journals that help them process their learning.
Grows:
- Refer to your Anchor Charts during the lesson so that students build connections in math.
- Consider the use of Math Academies. I have been noticing in the classroom the various student levels. Take one day from the week to conduct small group instruction where students can work on math at their level to help build their learning.
