Evacuation Drill on Wednesday, 9/14
Hello Families! This week on Wednesday, we will be conducting one of our monthly fire/evacuation drills. We have attached a few family resources to help support our students at home!
https://www.firesafekid.org/kids-zone-2/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhKD1CS8pcM&feature=emb_logo
What happens during an evacuation at Village? See below!
1. Vice Principal, Mrs. White, gets on the intercom and announces that the evacuation drill is beginning.
2. Teachers direct students to line up in a single file line, calmly and silently.3. Teachers take their classroom emergency bag with them.
4. The class evacuates silently using assigned route or alternate route if necessary.
5. Teacher closes the classroom door after the last student has left the room.
6. All classes meet at the playground (at assigned position) or other designated location (football field, in the event the playground puts staff and students in danger). Teachers direct students to be seated.
7. Use roster to take attendance. (Administration will verify that students are present with classroom teachers using the green/red sign and red attendance sheet.)
8. Hold up the GREEN CARD if all students are present or hold up the RED CARD if any student is missing. (Campus Security, CPD, and CFD will use the information provided on the red attendance sheet to search for any missing student/s and staff).
9. Remind students to stay silent throughout the drill.
10. Upon completion of the evacuation drill, students will be escorted back to their classroom with their teacher and debrief the drill.

Students have been enjoying their produce on Tuesdays in the form of our cucumber-tomato salad and on Fridays in the vegetable's whole form!
Everyone a Reader Volunteer Opportunity
Looking for volunteer reading tutors:
Village Elementary Everyone A Reader Team!!
Do you have a passion for reading? We have a wonderful volunteer opportunity for anyone who would love to share their time with a child. Our reading tutors receive 2+ hour training and then work 1 hour per week with “their” students on developing confidence and fluency in reading.
Everyone A Reader is a program designed and overseen by the San Diego County Office of Education and has proven to be a highly successful and positive way of supporting children in the process of learning to read.
Our mission is to fill the present need for additional tutors, and we are inviting you to consider becoming part of our wonderful team of moms, dads, grandparents and members of our community who are all giving the gift of reading to a child.
EAR volunteers must attend a 2+ hour training. If you have been trained previously, you do not need to attend. Training day and time information coming soon.
Please contact Lindsey Cummins 619-522-8915 x5201, or return the bottom portion (Link below) to the office/classroom teacher, if you are interested in tutoring.

Students are escorted out of the gates by their classroom teacher and students stay with their teacher until an adult has picked them up. If headed to Champions after school program, students are released to Champions staff near their classroom and are escorted from their classroom, to Village Hall with Champions supervision.
3rd-5th:
Students are escorted out of the gates by their classroom teacher, and are to either walk home by parent or alone, depending on parent preference. Please communicate with your child before the 1st day of school as to your individual preference.
Dismissal Caution:
- We know the first 2 weeks are always more hectic at dismissal time and thus, takes much more time, and is chaotic. As we get to know faces and names, it will take much less time at dismissal, but this generally takes the first two weeks to see a change. We ask for your patience as we iron out details and ensure all of our students are connected with the right people after school.
- After you pick up your student, we ask that you leave the dismissal area to help the congestion.
- Please monitor your student's behavior in front of school (no running on grass, playing tag, climbing trees, etc.) This is especially important for the preschool and TK pick up times, when playing/loud voices outside take away from the learning inside the classroom.
- Students who ride bikes or scooters, etc. need to walk their equipment while on the sidewalk in front of school on H and 6th streets.
- Please discuss pick up plans with your child before they leave to school each day. Relaying messages to students throughout the day causes disruptions and can not be guaranteed and should be avoided.
Walking/Biking/Scootering:
- Please follow the safest and most direct route to and from school (using crosswalks!) and follow directions of the school crossing guard.
- Safety helmets are required for biking/scootering/skating to school.
IN CASE OF RAIN OR INCLEMENT WEATHER, students will enter gates and report directly to classrooms between 8:00 and 8:10. Students will also be dismissed at their normal gates and times if raining.
Pets/dogs are not permitted on school grounds for reasons of health and safety, unless they are part of a prearranged instructional program. We encourage everyone to leave their dogs at home when coming to and from school. If you choose to walk your dog to school, please be mindful that some children are allergic and/or fearful of pets. Pets also run the risk of encountering little hands and encroachment of space that is not wanted and react adversely. For the safety of all of our families, we ask that you stand away from the crowds when you are with your pet.
Important Information about Village Elementary: Get Involved!
Village Parent and Teacher Organization (PTO):
Please, please become a member of PTO! Without the generous membership donations of time and money, Village would not be the incredible school that it is today! PTO pays for field trips, assemblies and presentations, grade level and teacher funding and school culture building. They host several events throughout the year like the Jog-a-thon, Bingo for Books, and Movie nights! Please check out our Village PTO page for more information and announcements.
Coronado Schools Foundation (CSF):
CSF is the Coronado Schools Foundation and is separate from our Village PTO. CSF raises money for special programs and pathways at Village. Our Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA), Innovation Lab (ILAB), Band and Choir are all paid for by CSF. Without your generous donations, our students would not be provided these opportunities. Please consider signing up for Hive365 to help keep our programs alive and thriving for our students.
Volunteering:
Volunteering will be in full swing. In order to volunteer you must complete the volunteer application. This includes a negative TB test within the last 4 years, no exceptions. Good News: We will have a volunteer TB survey on August 15th from 1-3 pm, at Village Hall. If you plan to volunteer, please come to this event! If you do not come to the event, and plan to volunteer, you will need to have a Dr.'s office prove your negative TB test or have a new negative TB test verification. Please be patient with us as we try to get volunteers on campus ASAP, all the while, following state and county mandates.
